The Brashear Lady Tigers basketball team wrote a page in the history books of Adair County R-II claiming their first state title in their first state playoff appearance with a 54-38 win over the Chilhowee Lady Indians. The Lady Tigers ended their season with a final record of 28-2. With such a great season it is no surprise that our players and Coach Sara Parish received recognition for their accomplishments throughout the 2002-2003 basketball season. First Team All-Conference and First Team All-District honors were received by Brooke Crandall, Jenny Elsea, and Kristin Osborn. Second Team All-Conference and Second Team All-District honors were received by Dani Moyer and Niki Peterson. Sara Parish was named Tri-County Conference and Northeast District "Coach of the Year".

The Tigers also had a successful 22-6 season that ended in sectional play at Highland where they were defeated by North Shelby 35-38. The Tigers shared the conference title with Bevier and LaPlata and were the District Champions. Nathan Kelsey was voted Tri-County Conference MVP and received First Team All-District honors. First Team All-Conference and First Team All-District honors were received by Drew Moyer.

In addition to the above honors, Kristin Osborn and Nathan Kelsey were named to KRES Radio’s All Star Basketball Team and to the Missouri Class 1 All-State Basketball First Teams.

We will be conducting our annual Kindergarten registration on Monday, May 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the elementary school. All district children who will be 5 years old prior to August 1, 2003 are eligible to register for Kindergarten for the 2003-2004 school year. Please bring the following items with you on that day: birth certificate, immunization records, and social security card.

Tuesday, April 8, is Election Day. Patrons of the Adair County R-II School District will be voting to elect two school board members. Incumbent Bradley A. Smith and Roger L. Thompson have filed for the positions.

Seventeen band students participated in the Central Methodist College Music Festival on February 28 in Fayette. The Concert Band, a Clarinet Trio with members Christina Scudder, Amanda Mills and Amanda Powell, as well as an Alto Saxophone Duet with Bridget Clarkson and Jessi Hill earned good (III) ratings for their performances. The following soloists earned excellent (II) ratings: Andrea Reeves - flute, Ashley Schneiderheinze - clarinet, and Tyler Killen - tuba. Six instrumental soloists earned superior (I) ratings including Tiffany Owen - flute, Christina Scudder - clarinet, Amanda Powell - clarinet, Bridget Clarkson - alto saxophone, Jacob Shipman - trumpet, and Seth Wheeler - snare drum.

Nine music students will participate in the MSHSAA District Music Festival being held March 28 and 29 at Truman State University in Kirksville. Performing will be vocal soloist, Samantha Stewart, a Girls Vocal Sextet including Alexis Longano, Ashley Schneiderheinze, Amanda Powell, Samantha Stewart, Danielle Lowe and Brooke Salter, and a Flute Trio including Andrea Reeves, Monika Shaver and Tiffany Owen. The community will hear many of these soloists and small ensembles perform at the second half of our annual "Spring Fling" held in conjunction with the PTS meeting on April 14 at 7:00 p.m.

On July 9th and 10th, Brashear High School will be hosting The Chute Shooting Camp. The three sessions will include high school girls, 4th-8th grade girls, and 4th-8th grade boys. The session breakdown refers to the grade the student will be in next year.

The purpose of the camp is to teach the most important fundamental in the game of basketball, SHOOTING! The goal is to teach every participant the correct way to shoot the basketball, and help them expand on their arsenal of offensive moves. The Chute is a very big part of this process.

What is the Chute? The Chute is a device invented and patented by Coach Jody Maske. The Chute serves as a great instructional aid for teaching and fine tuning proper shooting form. There will be one Chute for every two to three athletes that attend each camp. Athletes will not be standing in long lines, they will be working!

The new elementary addition is beginning to take on the look of a nearly finished building. As you drive by, you will see that the exterior appearance is changing. Windows and doors have been installed and the brick and EIFS system has made a noticeable difference in the look of the building.

Classrooms are nearing completion with the installation of the HVAC system, floor covering and miscellaneous hardware.

As we come close to the end of this architectural project it seems appropriate to quote Donna Oliver, 1987 United States Teacher of the Year, when she said, "Teachers are the architectural designers of nations. People must see that education is not an expense, but an investment."

A NEW FACE: We have a counseling intern with us this semester from Truman State University. You may have heard your son or daughter talking about Ms. Herrmann. Ms. Herrmann is with us Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings. We are very glad to have her and the students think it is great fun to "help Ms. Herrmann learn how to be a counselor".

FUN LUNCH WITH MRS. GRISSOM: I've been having lunch with students each day. (Sometimes 3 lunches a day with different students!!!) I wanted to give the students an opportunity to get to know me better and for me to do likewise. It has been a lot of fun and they have greatly enjoyed coming to my office to eat.

LUNCH BUNCH CLUB: There are currently three Lunch Bunch Club groups meeting on a regular basis each week to work on specific goals like expressing feelings, leadership skills, and making friends. Right now these groups are elementary students but if the need arises, there could definitely be some high school groups as well.

ZAP: Beginning this week, grades 6-10 are involved with ZAP (Zeros Aren't Permitted). You received a letter in the mail last week about this program. If your student does not turn in an assignment on time, they are given a ZAP Missing Assignment Sheet to fill out and bring home for you to sign. At that point they have two choices. They can either bring their assignment back by 8:30 the next morning with their signed ZAP sheet or they have to stay for ZAP tutoring detention.

CAREERS ON WHEELS FAIR: On May 8, we will be hosting a Careers on Wheels fair for the elementary. This is a great way for students to learn more about different careers and the "wheels" (vehicles) that go with them. If you have "wheels" that you use in your career that you would like to bring, please contact me. Some examples of vehicles I've worked with in the past are: tractors, semis, bulldozers (not on wheels but still a vehicle), race cars, ambulance, fire, and many, many more.

SPRING TESTING: Spring MAP and Terra Nova testing begins on April 1 and will run through May 2nd. You should have received a testing schedule in the mail last week. The back of your testing letter listed some helpful tips and most common mistakes made on the MAP. Please help us by ensuring that your child is well-rested, has a good breakfast, and is present during all testing days.

Brashear Lady Tigers 2003 State Basketball Championship Apparel will be available for purchase. Items for sale will include t-shirts, long sleeve T’s, crew sweatshirts and hooded sweatshirts. All of the above will be available in black or grey.

Also available will be a state championship hat. The hat will be white with a khaki-orange-black Brashear Lady Tigers STATE CHAMPIONS logo. The hat features a waffle bill with a basketball champions logo and "THE GAME" logo on the back. The hat has a self-material strap, one-size fits most all. The hat is made by "THE GAME" Hat Company. A sample of the hat can be seen in the office of the superintendent. We must have a minimum order of 36.
