BOARD VOTES TO PLACE BOND ISSUE ON APRIL BALLOT

The Citizens Advisory Building Committee, appointed by the Adair County R-II School Board in May of 2001, met frequently during this past summer and fall.  On their recommendation, the school board hired John Hansen with Midwest Construction Consultants as a Construction Manager.  Their firm conducted a study of the existing facilities and made a recommendation to the board to go forward with a new elementary addition as the most economically feasible solution to provide for the educational needs of our elementary students.

In a Special Board Meeting held on January 15, the Adair County R-II School Board voted to place a $900,000 General Obligation Bond on the ballot for the April election.  Approval of the bond is not expected to increase the debt service levy beyond the original 69 cents required to service the 1990 General Obligation Bonds.  The bond issue and levy amounts were set after much discussion during several board meetings and were the results of several months of planning and careful evaluation of the overall facilities and curriculum needs of the district.  This building program is the direct outgrowth of recommendations made by the staff, faculty, administration, Citizens Advisory Committee, and Board of Education.

The ballot shall read as follows:

Shall the Board of Education of the Adair County R-II School District, Missouri, borrow money in an amount not to exceed Nine Hundred Thousand Dollars ($900,000.00) for the purpose of providing funds for the construction, equipping, and furnishing of a new elementary school addition; to complete other remodeling and repair improvements to the existing facilities of the District; and issue bonds for the payment thereof?

Open forums will be held in the months preceding the election to inform the public of issues concerning the election and proposed construction, design, and placement for the elementary addition.

SCHOOL BOARD

RECOGNITION WEEK

Local school board members are dedicated citizens who carry out the truest form of representative government—volunteer public service.  School board service is perhaps the purest expression of grassroots democratic principles upon which our nation was founded.

In these challenging times, school board members are called upon to make tough decisions.  It seems fitting that at least once a year we thank them for their time and dedication.  So at this time we would like to thank our dedicated school board members who are vital to the success of our school.

Brenda Kelsey, Board President

Doug Clarkson, Vice President

Mary Magruder, Secretary

Eddy Turner, Treasurer

Kenneth Crandall, Member

Brent Hettinger, Member

Brad Smith, Member

Being an effective school board member is no easy task.  Lay school leaders need to be knowledgeable about many complex educational and social issues.  Board members govern individual school districts, establish local policies, approve educational programs, provide necessary physical facilities, hire the superintendent, and share in costs by raising necessary local funds along with state funds to operate district educational programs.

School board members’ service ensures that decisions about our public schools are made as close to the needs of our children and communities as possible.  Further, our local board members serve as examples for our young people of the excellent tradition of volunteering that is a hallmark of our society.

School board members face challenges every day.  For their untiring personal dedication and commitment to public service, let’s give our school board members a hand.

SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES

This year we have had three candidates file for the three available positions on the Adair County R-II School Board.  Those who have filed include incumbent Doug Clarkson, incumbent Kenneth Crandall, and Curtis Gordon.  Please remember to vote on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 for your local Board members.

If you are not a registered voter, the last day to register to vote in the general election is Wednesday, March 6.

BRASHEAR TOURNAMENT

The Adair County R-II 73rd Annual Invitational Tournament will be held from Monday, January 28 through Saturday, February 2 at the Brashear High School gymnasium.  We will host six teams:  Clark County JV, Newtown-Harris, Novinger, Revere, St. Thomas Seminary and Wyaconda.  The tournament brackets are included with this mailing so you can find game times, etc.

The admission fees for the tournament games are $2.00 for students, $3.00 for adults, $1.00 for senior citizens or $8.00 per family.  Family is defined as parent(s) and child(ren) only.  We hope to have good community support, as we always have, for the tournament games.

We also ask you to remember our tournament is centered around winning, as is true in any competition.  More important than winning, however, is the attitude with which the athletes and fans approach the game.  As fans we must do our best to set a good example for those around us.  Cheer for your favorite team in the spirit of the game and leave the officiating to the professionals who are trained for the task.  We wish for each team to play their best, and may the best team win!

REQUEST FOR FABRIC REMNANTS

The elementary drama students are in need of fabric with which to make costumes for an upcoming play.  If you have fabric that you no longer need, we would appreciate any remnants of burlap, beige or gray flannel or brushed cotton, velvet, brocade or other fancy cloth, synthetic fur, chiffon or other filmy fabric, gold foil, fringe or braiding, lace, and leather.  We could also use a cape, elbow length gloves, a gold crown, and rhinestone tiara.  Thanks!
