NATIONAL SAVE
A LIFE TOUR VISITS BHS
Mrs. Grissom,
with complete funding from State Farm Insurance company, sponsored the national
“Save A Life” Tour at BHS on Monday, April 28. The “Save A Life” tour is a high impact national
campaign that promotes alcohol awareness and demonstrates the debilitating
results alcohol consumption has on the motor and nerve centers of the human
body.
The new
state-of-the-art Simulation Experience immersed the students in a
realistic and virtual drinking and driving situation. They thought and felt like they were driving a car while
intoxicated. This is the very same
technology used to train police and military personnel. The driver began the experience “sober”. Then the controls were adjusted so the
student began to feel as though they were driving drunk. They began to lose control of the road,
their focus became blurred, and they were tested with every element of Mother
Nature’s tricks. When the simulation experience
concluded, the student was left to remember those feelings of lost control and
panic for the rest of their lives.
To further
enhance the devastating consequences of drinking and driving, there were 8’ x
10’ monitors that displayed not only the driver’s point of view, but also the
point of view from high over head in a helicopter, as if the entire incident
were being captured on live television news.
There was even an actual casket displayed on scene to further drive home
the finality of a drunken driving death.

HIGH SCHOOL
GRADUATION
The Adair County
R-II High School graduation ceremony will be held in the high school gymnasium
on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. The
public is cordially invited to attend.
The fifteen
seniors include David Anderson, Josiah Belzer, Tiffany Blake, Jeremy Clay,
Jessica Hill, Tyler Horton, Hailee Kelsey, Alexis Longano, J.J. McFarland,
Michael (Tony) Raine, Christina Scudder, Monika Shaver, Jacob Shipman, Kale
Watson, and Cassandra Wood.
The receiving
line for the graduates will be in the cafeteria immediately following the
ceremony. In addition, National Honor
Society will be hosting a punch and cookie reception.

SIXTH GRADE
PROMOTION
The Adair County
R-II sixth grade promotion ceremony will be held in the high school gymnasium
on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
The public is welcome to attend.
The twenty-one sixth

TIGER PRIDE
PROGRAM NEWS
The Tiger Pride
Before & After-School Program has had a wonderful year! Our enrollment has steadily increased and
students' families report good experiences!
Thank you for supporting this program as it is a valuable service to
families!
If your child is
to attend the summer school program and will be coming early or staying later
for the after-school program, they need to be enrolled in Tiger Pride. If your child is not currently enrolled,
please contact Mrs. Kerby and an enrollment packet will be provided.
We would like to
thank the Adair County YMCA for helping Tiger Pride host a movie/games night on
Monday, April 21. There were 11
children in attendance and they had a great time playing, snacking and watching
a movie. The YMCA is one of our Community
Partners and we are extremely thankful for their gracious support!
Please remember
that there will be no Tiger Pride on the last day of school (Wednesday, May 21)
to allow staff to begin preparing their space for the fast approaching Summer
School program.
Tiger Pride is
licensed by Missouri's Department of Health and Senior Services. They are asking for your feedback on the
State's Child Care Regulation's existing rules. You are invited to attend one of five focus groups being offered
throughout the state during the month of June.

AWARDS
BANQUET/SILENT AUCTION
The annual Awards
Banquet will be held on Monday, May 5, 2008.
The banquet will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the elementary gymnasium with the
awards ceremony to follow starting at approximately 7:00 p.m.
Each family
attending the banquet is asked to bring two covered dishes and their own table
service. Drinks and some meat will be
furnished by the Athletics Department.
The public is welcome to attend.
2008 YEARBOOK
SALES CONTINUE
Yearbook sales
began on November 1 and will continue through May. This is the 60th edition of the BHS yearbook. The number of yearbooks for the year is
limited. Plan to order a yearbook in
order to reserve a copy for you and your family.
Personalized
yearbooks are no longer available, however, yearbooks without names may still
be purchased for $60. Please make your
check payable to Adair County R-II School.
SPORTS PHYSICALS
Sports physicals
are required under the guidelines of the Missouri State High School Activities
Association (MSHSAA) prior to participation in school sporting activities. Sports physicals are provided free of charge
at the Adair County Health Department, 660-665-8491. They are performed on Wednesdays and are by appointment
only. Physicals can also be performed
by your family physician. Physical
forms can be obtained from the High School Office, Nurse’s Office, or at www.mshsaa.org.
Please return completed forms to the school prior to participation in
activities.

LUNCH REFUNDS
Lunch refunds
will only be given to Seniors on their last day of school. Karla will be sending home bills for those students
with a negative balance in their accounts.
Any money remaining in your child(ren)’s account(s) will be carried over
to the 2008-2009 school year. Refunds
will be given only if requested. If you
have any questions, please feel free to contact Renee or Karla at

SUMMER SCHOOL
ATTENDANCE INCENTIVE
Attendance at summer school is important in order for your child
to gain the full benefit of the experience.
In an effort to encourage students’ attendance at Summer School this
year, we will award a $20 Wal-Mart Gift Card to students with 95% or better
attendance.
Enrollment for
summer school is still open. Classes
will begin May 27, 2008 and run through June 25, 2008. The program is intended for all
students who will be in kindergarten through eighth grade in the fall of
2008. The before and after school
program (Tiger Pride) will be available to extend the school day. Afternoon transportation will be available
after the Tiger Pride program and breakfast and lunch will be served. Applications are still being accepted.
SCHOOL BOARD
REORGANIZES
The Adair County
R-II Board of Education met in special session on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, to
swear in new members and reorganize.
The officers elected are as follows:
President, Brad Smith; Vice President, Doug Clarkson; Secretary, Curtis
Gordon; Treasurer, Traci Hill; and
Board Delegate, Matt Reeves. Members
are Brent Hettinger and Roger Thompson.

ADAIR COUNTY R-II NAMED IN THE TOP-TEN MAP
HIGHEST PERFORMING SCHOOLS
Two Adair
County R-II School classes have been recognized for high performance on the
Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests for the spring of 2007. The 2006-07 sixth grade at Brashear
Elementary were named one of the top ten schools (with an enrollment less than
250) in math with 80% of the students scoring “Advanced” or “Proficient”. The 2006-07 eleventh grade at Brashear High
School ranked 2nd out of the top ten schools in communication arts with 80% of
students scoring “Advanced” or “Proficient”.
The Top-Ten List is a
list of schools in each of three categories (schools with less than 250
students, schools between 250 to 500 students, and schools with more than 500
students) whose students represent the top ten schools in percent of students
scoring at the “proficient” and “advanced” levels on the spring state
achievement test otherwise known as the MAP test.
The “proficient” and “advanced” level is a standard set by the
Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as the “gold”
standard or the benchmark established as the desirable achievement level for
all students.

TIGER PRIDE
Congratulations
to the high school academic bowl team for finishing second at the District
Tournament on Saturday, April 12.
Josiah Belzer was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Congratulations
to the following students who won first place at District Industrial Arts
contest at Moberly on Friday, April 18:
Nick Bradshaw, Joe Clarkson, Hayden Coin, Ryan Ferdig, and Morgan
Taylor. These students are eligible to
compete at the State Industrial Arts contest on Friday, May 2 at Lodge of the
Four Seasons in Lake Ozark.
Congratulations
to Tabitha Killen for placing first in Introduction to Business Communications
at the Missouri FBLA State Leadership Conference. Tabitha is eligible to compete at the National FBLA Leadership
Conference. This conference will be
held on June 26-29 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Christina Scudder placed fourth in Accounting and ninth in Technology
Concepts. Jay Scudder placed sixth in
Introduction to Business Communications and tenth in Introduction to Technology
Concepts.
The 4th and 5th
graders recently participated in the conservation poster contest sponsored by
the Adair County Soil and Water Conservation District. The 4th grade winners were 1st place-Kourtney
Arnold, 2nd place-Skylar Housman, and 3rd place-Mandy Taylor. The 5th Grade winners were Allison
Thompson-1st place, Chance Hill-2nd place, and Abby Hall-3rd place. Kourtney also won first place overall for
the county in 4th grade and her poster will advance to state competition.

IRA DONATION
Thank you to the
International Reading Association at Truman State University for their donation
to the library. IRA members Micah
Lindsey, Robin Chamberlin, and Kristina Rieman presented Mrs. Denise Brown with
a check for $360 to be used to purchase books and several autographed books by
author Ruby Harris. The Truman IRA held
a silent auction to raise money for area schools.
