NEW LEGISLATION WILL IMPACT SCHOOLS

 

Federal Legislation – “No Child Left Behind”

The meaning of this legislation is still being interpreted, but it appears full implementation will require schools to make many changes.  Yearly testing of reading and mathematics in grades three through eight starting in 2005-2006 is the most obvious change.  Early discussions with DESE indicate a desire to create tests that will be similar to MAP tests in the content assessed and in question types.  The legislation appears to contain requirements that differ somewhat from MAP but the exact details are still being defined.

 

How does this affect our students?  The bill requires that 95% of students taking the assessments score at a “proficient level.”  “Proficient” appears to be defined as meeting the grade-level expectation.  This will require a change in the way Missouri defines “proficient.”  Our present definition is significantly above grade-level expectation.  So as the “No Child Left Behind” Legislation takes effect, it will require a shift in our way of thinking in regard to the definition of “proficient”.

 

Signifying the start of a historic, new era in education with the No Child Left Behind Act, the U.S. Department of Education is airing a new television series to help parents understand the new law and all the important changes that it will bring.  Education News will broadcast on the third Tuesday of each month during the school year.  A schedule of topics for the entire 2002-03 school year is available at http://registerevent.ed.gov.  In addition, live and archived webcasts of each show will be available at http://www.connectlive.com/events/edtownmeetings.

NATIONAL PATRIOT DAY CELEBRATED IN ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM

 

The fifth grade class celebrated National Patriot Day 2002 on September 11th.  The class enjoyed many activities including writing and sending patriotic poems and letters to the military stationed in Al-Udeid Air Base, Qatar. 

 

Recently, the class received a letter of appreciation from Lieutenant Colonel Paul J. Zabbo, Commander, 379th Air Expeditionary Group.  In addition, the class received an American flag and certificate which reads in part:

This American Flag Was Flown Aboard A KC-10 During an Operation Enduring Freedom Combat Mission Over Afghanistan On The 8th Day of October 2002 for Adair County R-II 5th Grade Class.  On this day, the aircraft flew a combat mission over the country of Afghanistan, refueling aircraft engaged in combat sorties against enemy forces in support of the international war on terrorism.

 

The flag can be viewed in the 5th grade classroom along with the certificate.

 

NEWS FROM THE MUSIC ROOM

 

Congratulations to the following Glee Club members for representing our school well in the Tri-County Conference Choir on October 28.  They were Megan Conn, Alexis Longano, Danielle Lowe, Kayla Moots, Amanda Powell, and Brooke Salter.

 

Also Congratulations to the Brashear Marching Tigers Band for completing a successful marching band season!  Members include Drum Major Andrea Reeves, Megan Conn, Monika Shaver, Christina Scudder, Ashley Schneiderhenize, Tyler Horton, Bridget Clarkson, Jessi Hill, David Anderson, Jacob Shipman, James Woods, Tyler Killen, Seth Wheeler, Alexis Longano, Tiffany Blake, and Jeremy Clay.  Flag team members include Captain Tiffany Owen, Kayla Hettinger, Magen Helm, Stefanie McKim, Kellie Primmer, Amanda Mills, Amanda Powell, and Patricia Woods.  Banner carriers were Ashlee Mills and J. J. McFarland.  Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and outstanding representation of

our school and community.

 

TIGER PRIDE

 

Congratulations to the softball team for winning the Tri-County Conference title.  Niki Peterson was named MVP for the conference and Sara Parish was named Coach of the Year.  Jenny Elsea and Kristin Osborn were selected to the All-Conference 1st Team, Dani Moyer to the 2nd team and Lacy Church Honorable Mention.  First Team All-District players were Kristin Osborn and Niki Peterson.   Honorable Mention All-District Players were Brooke Crandall, Jenny Elsea and Dani Moyer.  Our All-Region players included pitcher Niki Peterson and infielder Kristin Osborn.

 

Baseball players receiving 1st Team All-Conference honors were Nathan Kelsey and Jared Osborn.  Chase Cole and Drew Moyer received 2nd Team All-Conference honors.

 

Congratulations also to Hailee Kelsey who wrote a poem as an English class assignment and submitted it to a poetry contest.  She is now a semi-finalist and her poem has been accepted for publication.

 

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

 

The students in grades K-6 are once again participating in the BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION PROGRAM which pays 10 cents for each Box Top coupon from various grocery items.  We will receive a check in December for a bit over $200. 

 

Each quarter of this school year we will award the class which averages the largest amount of coupons a little reward for their effort.

 

This quarter the first grade class and Mrs. Fisher received a treat because of their collecting an average of 18 coupons each. 

 

Thanks to all parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbors who have contributed to this cause.  Let’s do even better the second quarter.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

 

Progress is being made on the construction of the new elementary building.  Over excavation of the building site is complete with the excess fill placed west of the tennis courts. 

 

Relocation and temporary installation of utilities is also complete.  The construction crew is in the process of pouring the footings and will soon be ready to pour the floor slab.

 

We apologize for the parking inconvenience that our construction project has caused and ask for your continued patience.
