NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK
The
elementary school will be celebrating National School Lunch week October
13-17. Plan on eating with your
favorite Brashear Elementary student during this week. An adult lunch costs $2.75 and includes the
main entrée, salad bar, as well as milk, water, or tea.
Please
let us know the day before you are eating by sending a note with your child or
giving us a call. The schedule is as
follows:

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
School
will be dismissed at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 23rd for parent teacher
conferences. Conferences are scheduled
from 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. If you have
not already done so, please contact the appropriate office to schedule an
appointment for your child(ren). You
will be able to pick up first quarter grade cards at the time of your
conference.
The
students in grades K-6 are once again participating in the BOX TOPS FOR
EDUCATION PROGRAM which pays 10 cents for each Box Top coupon from various
grocery items. Thanks to all parents,
grandparents,
friends, and neighbors who
have
contributed to this cause.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
SURROGATE PARENT PROGRAM
Pursuant
to the requirements of state law 162.997-999-RSMo, the State Board of Education
is required to appoint a surrogate parent as such time as it becomes evident
that a child with a disability does not have a parent or a person acting as a
parent to participate in matters dealing with the provision of special
education. For purposes of surrogate
parent appointment, “parent” is defined as a biological parent, a guardian, or
a person acting as a parent of a child including, but not limited to, a
grandparent, a step parent, or a foster parent with whom the child lives. The term does not include the State if the
child is a ward of the State. The term
does not include a person whose parental rights have been terminated.
The
local school district is given the responsibility to determine when a child
with a disability who requires special education and who resides in the
District is without a parent. The
District must notify the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education of the need to appoint a surrogate parent. Training for persons serving as surrogate parents will be
provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and
the District.
If
you are interested in volunteering to serve as a surrogate parent, more
information can be obtained from the Districts’ surrogate parent contact person
- the person responsible for the District’s special education program.

students were recognized for scoring proficient or advanced on the Spring 2008

PAT NEWS
Thank
you to all of the families who joined us for our PAT “Messy Night”. We had a great time learning and playing
with activities that families can do at home.
Our next PAT Group Meeting, “Fall Fun” will be Wednesday, October 15th
from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Elementary Gym.
Mark your calendars to join us for this fun-filled fall event. More information will be sent to PAT
families along with the registration form.

TRUNK OR TREAT
Halloween
is fast approaching and this year the Brashear Student Council would like to
welcome parents and community members to help put on a Trunk or Treat. What is a Trunk or Treat you ask? A Trunk or Treat is a safe way for people to
set up a stand out of the back of their car (hence the trunk) and pass out
candy to all the Trick or Treaters.
Come and decorate the back of your vehicle and help us provide a safe
Trick or Treating opportunity for kids from 5:30-7:30 or until the candy is
gone. This is a perfect way for those
living outside of town to get a chance to pass out candy. Please contact Mr. McHenry at 323-5272 if
you would like to participate.
Parent Information Resource Centers were developed by Congress under
the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to provide parents, schools, and
other organizations working with families with the information and support
(including training and technical assistance) needed to understand how children
develop and what they need to succeed in school. LIFT (Literacy Investment for Tomorrow) Missouri, serves as
Missouri’s Parent Information Resource Center.
LIFT provides training, technical assistance, resources, and support
across the state to enhance parent involvement by working with school districts
and multiple organizations. Some LIFT
PIRC partners are: Practical Parenting Partnerships, Parents as Teachers, and

INCLEMENT WEATHER
As
the winter season approaches, we are reminding parents and students to listen
to the local media stations to check on “early dismissals” and/or “no school”
bulletins. This information will be given
to KTVO television, KHQA television, WGEM television, KIRX radio, KTUF radio,
KRXL radio, KLTE radio, KRES radio of Moberly, KMEM radio of Memphis, and KZBK
radio of Brookfield. These stations
will present dismissal information as soon as decisions have been made. Please do not call the school.
EXTENDED LIBRARY HOURS
As part of the 21st
Century Community Learning Center after-school grant, the library media center
will offer extended hours this year. It will be open so families can take
time to check out books to enjoy together. Our first library time will be
on October 27 from 6:30 to 7:00 pm. This coincides with the Tiger Pride’s
“Lights On Afterschool” event.
Your child does not have to be a part of the Tiger Pride program for your
family to participate. The library is
also available to adults to check out materials.
LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL
You're
invited to attend our Lights on Afterschool and Red Ribbon Week kick-off on
Monday, October 27. Mark your calendars
now and watch for more details to come out soon. We've got a great program in store with lots of activities for
the whole family to do together. It is
important to remember that doing things as a family is one of the best ways to
fight against drugs and deter your kids from them. We've got a strong man show planned, a game room, a station where
you can make a meal with your family to take home and either freeze or cook for
the evening. You won't want to miss it.
ALEX’S LEMONADE STAND
Mrs.
Grissom along with Brashear National Honor Society are hosting a school wide
service project this year with proceeds to go towards Alex's Lemonade Stand. In
2000, a 4 year old cancer patient named Alexandra "Alex" Scott
announced a seemingly simple idea—she was holding a lemonade stand to raise
money to help "her doctors" find a cure for kids with cancer. The
idea was put into action by Alex and her older brother, Patrick, when they set
up the first "Alex's Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer" on their
front lawn in July of 2000. Read more
of this amazing story at www.alexslemonade.org. Collection boxes will be in each elementary
classroom as well as the high school office.
Watch for more fun fundraising activities to come this year including a
"Lemonade Off" where you'll be able to enter your lemonade to see if
judges think it tastes the best.

NEWS FROM THE COUNSELOR
There
are a lot of exciting things going on in the guidance office in October. College representatives will be
coming to visit and any junior or senior interested in talking with them
can. College reps can tell you a lot
about their school as well as about the college application and financial aid
process in general. Colleges that are
on the calendar so far include: Indian
Hills Community College on 10/7 and Missouri Western on 11/17. Watch the bulletin for more to come up.
Juniors will have the option of taking the PSAT test on 10/15. This test lets you assess your critical
reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills; get specific suggestions
on how to improve your academic skills; prepare for the SAT; enter the National
Merit Scholarship competitions (with qualifying scores); request free
information from colleges and universities; and use My College QuickStart to
access free resources and information about college and career planning. The cost of this test is $13 and checks can
be made payable to the school and given to Renee prior to testing that
day. Juniors interested in taking this
test need to sign up on my door.
All
sophomores will be taking the PLAN test on 10/22 during 1st - 3rd
hours. The scores we receive from this
test contain a lot of information about skills, interests, plans, and
goals. We use this information to make
sure the high school courses that have been planned are the best ones possible. It helps us get a better sense of where the
students are, where they might want to go, and how to get there. The test scores show us relative strengths
and weaknesses in four subject areas important for success in college: English, math, reading, and science.
On
Monday, October 20th I will be taking all interested juniors and seniors to the
Scotland County College Fair from 1:00-2:30 p.m. Students will be able to visit with a wide
variety of colleges, universities, and military personnel to help them
determine where they might want to go after high school. Interested students will be asked to sign up
to attend on my door and permission slips will be sent home.
On
Tuesday, October 28th, all students in grades 10-12 who are interested in a
career in the health field will have the opportunity to attend a Healthcare
Career Day at the Sullivan County Hospital. Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of career
options as well as college options for the health profession.
JUNIOR/SENIOR PARENT NIGHT will be held during parent-teacher conferences
on Thursday, October 23 from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
All parents of juniors and seniors won't want to miss this informative
meeting about what to expect for your student's junior and senior year.
RED RIBBON WEEK is October 27-31. National Honor Society students have been working dilegently to
help me prepare for the week. Watch for
more information to come home closer to time.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS AT PUBLIC LIBRARY
FALL INTO BOOKS READING PROGRAM—The fall reading program for children in
Preschool thru 8th grade at the Adair County Public Library begins October 1
and lasts five weeks. Participants will
track reading library books with top readers receiving Missouri State Award Books
at the Babaloo Concert on Saturday, November 8. Both the reading program and concert are sponsored through a gift
by Carol’s Corner.
LADY LIBERTY—Circle K members host an hour long Saturday afternoon
program on October 18 from 1:00-2:00 p.m.
Children ages 2-12 will take a closer look at the Statue of Liberty, her
history and significance to our country.
Stories and crafts are part of the free program.
SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN PARTY—Phi Sigma Pi members present an hour long
evening program on Tuesday, October 28 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Children ages 2-12 can decorate pumpkins,
play ghostly games, listen to stories, and make crafts. Come dressed in costume.
