21ST CCLC TIGER PRIDE NEWS

 

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 19 and Monday, April 24 from 5:30-6:30

p.m.  All Tiger-Pride families are invited to a discussion about children's physical and emotional development.  Along with enjoying a light meal, we will be discussing how our school handles sex education and how we as parents can cover this issue with our children at the appropriate ages/stages of development (sometimes at an earlier age than we had anticipated).  We will also be discussing how to teach our children to protect themselves from any inappropriate advances.  All parents are welcome as there will be information for helping any age child better understand their growing selves!  Child care will be available!  Be looking

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

 

We will be conducting our annual Kindergarten registration on Monday, May 8,  from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the elementary school.  All district children who will be 5 years old prior to August 1, 2006 are eligible to register for Kindergarten for the 2006-2007 school year.  Please plan to bring your child’s birth certificate and immunization records with you on that day.

 

YEARBOOK SALES

 

Yearbook sales will begin on April 1 and will continue through May.  This is the 58th edition of the BHS yearbook.  The number of yearbooks ordered for the year is limited—only 100 copies have been ordered.  Plan to order a yearbook early in order to reserve a copy for you and your family.

 

Yearbooks will be $46 without a name and $50 with a name.  Yearbooks with a name must be ordered by Friday, April 21.  Yearbooks ordered on or after May 1 will be $50.  Please make your check payable to Adair County R-II School.  Order forms may be returned to the elementary or high school offices.

 

APRIL ELECTION

 

Tuesday, April 4, 2006 is Election Day.  Patrons of the Adair County R-II School District will be voting to elect two school board members.  This year we have had three candidates file for the two available positions.  Those who have filed include incumbent Brad Smith, incumbent Roger L. Thompson, and Robert Kelsey.

 

FAMILY ADVOCACY PROJECT

 

The Family Advocacy Project will be offering Positive Parenting Classes during April 2006.  These classes are made possible with a grant from the Children’s Trust Fund of Missouri.  They are free to anyone who wishes to attend.  The classes will be held at 1400 S. Boundary in Kirksville.

 

Topics of discussion will be: Communication, Boundaries, Discipline and Self-Esteem.

 

These classes will be held April 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, and 20 at 6:00 p.m.

 

MUSIC NEWS

 

Twenty Music Students from Brashear participated in the Central Methodist University Music Festival held on March 3 at the CMU Campus in Fayette.  Thirteen Solo and Ensemble events earned Excellent (II) ratings including:  Cody Snelling - Snare Drum; Jacob Shipman - Trumpet; Katie Stewart - French Horn; Abigail Wheeler - Clarinet; Jeremy Clay - Snare Drum; Tyler Horton - Alto Saxophone; Alexis Harrelson - Clarinet; Christina Scudder - Clarinet; Stephanie Linhart - Vocal Solo; Katie Stewart - Vocal Solo; Justin Hazen - Baritone; Jacob Shipman, David Anderson, Katie Stewart, Stephanie Linhart, Justin Hazen & Alexis Longano - Brass Sextet; and Andrea Reeves, Tabitha Killen, Christina Scudder & Alexis Harrelson - Woodwind Quartet.  Ten soloists earned Superior (I) ratings including: Abby McKim - Snare Drum; David Anderson - Trumpet; Stephanie Elsea - Snare Drum; Shelton Johnson - Trumpet; Sydney Slavin - Trombone; Jay Scudder - Alto Saxophone; Tabitha Killen - Flute; Andrea Reeves - Flute; Alexis Longano - Tuba; and Stephanie Linhart - Trombone.  Five of these students will go on to the District Music Festival for Solos and Ensembles on April 1.  They and others will be featured at our Spring Concert April 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Gymnasium.

 

Also featured at the spring concert will be the Beginning and Elementary Bands, Chorus, and the Excellent (II) rated Brashear Junior/Senior High Band.  The Band earned its state level rating at the MSHSAA  District Music Festival held at Kirksville High School on March 25.  The band was one of only three bands at the festival to earn this rating for their concert and sightreading performances.  Along with the musical performances, student projects from the Brashear Visual Arts and Industrial Technology Departments will be on display.  All friends of the Arts are encouraged to attend.

 

TIGER PRIDE

 

Congratulations to the following students who qualified for state competition at the District 3 FBLA contest on February 20:  Josiah Belzer, Introduction to Business Communications,  1st; and Christina Scudder, Introduction to Business, 2nd.  These students will compete at the State Leadership Conference in Columbia on April 24-25.  Congratulations to both on qualifying for state competition two years in a row.  Congratulations also to the following students who placed in the Top 10 at District 3 FBLA contest:  Amanda Powell, Business Communications; Kiley Watson, Business Math; Stefanie McKim, Accounting I; David Anderson, Word Processing I; ChaRae Cole, Accounting I; Jessi Hill, Business Math; Courtney Clarkson, Introduction to Business; and Andrew Linhart, Business Calculations.

 

Our high school basketball teams recently completed their winter seasons.  Kimberly Elsea was named to the North Shelby All-Tournament Team.  Tri-County All-Conference selections included Kimberly Elsea—First Team; ChaRae Cole, Hailee Kelsey, and Kale Watson—Second Team; and Jessi Hill and Jacob Shipman—Honorable Mention.  Kimberly Elsea was also named to the All-District Second Team. 

 

Congratulations to Shanea Rusk for being inducted into the National Technical Honor Society. 

 

Congratulations to Brandon Claybrook for placing 3rd in the District Skills America Contest on Friday, March 3.

 

Chelsey Collop and Seth Wheeler have been selected as our representatives to attend Missouri Girls State and Missouri Boys State this summer.

 

Congratulations to our administrators—Mrs. Shipman, Mr. Johnson, and Mrs. Bradley—for being chosen as Administrators of the Year by the Northeast Missouri School Counselor Association. 

 

DISTRICT ACADEMIC BOWL

 

We will be hosting the District AcademicCompetition on Saturday, April 8.  Games start at 9:00 a.m.  Nine teams will be competing.  The public is welcome to attend.

 

GROUNDHOG JOB SHADOW DAY

 

A huge thank you to all of the parents and local business people who helped make Adair County R-II Schools Groundhog Job Shadow Day a success.   Fifty-seven students from grades 5, 7 and 10 were out on the job in February. 

 

Groundhog Job Shadow Day is sponsored by America’s Promise, National School-to-Work Opportunities Office, Junior Achievement and American Society of Association Executives and is a day dedicated to giving young people across America Job Shadowing experiences.  Job shadowing enables kids to shadow a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job, providing an up-close look at how the skills learned in school are put into action in the workplace.

 

Students returned from their job shadowing experience enthusiastic and with a better understanding of how the skills learned in the school environment are used in the “real world” work place.  We appreciate the effort put forth by the parents, mentors and businesses involved in making this a successful learning experience for these students.

ADAIR COUNTY R-II NAMED IN THE TOP-TEN MAP HIGHEST PERFORMING SCHOOLS

 

The students in the Adair County R-II School District have once again earned the honor of being named in the Top-Ten Schools in Missouri (with less than 250 students) when it comes to performance on the MAP Test (Missouri Assessment Program). 

 

The Top-Ten List is a list of schools in each of three categories (schools with less than 250 students, schools between 250 to 500 students, and schools with more than 500 students) whose students represent the top ten schools in percent of students scoring at the “proficient” and “advanced” levels on the spring state achievement test otherwise known as the MAP test.

 

The “proficient” and “advanced” level is a standard set by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as the “gold” standard or the benchmark established as the desirable achievement level for all students.

 

From the Spring 2005 Assessment, students in Grade 8 Math and Grade 11 Communication Arts earned the distinction of being named on the MAP Top-Ten List.

SPORTS PHYSICAL CLINIC

 

Since our students in grades 9-12 were not able to complete their physicals on March 21(snow day), the Adair County Health Department has agreed to conduct a sports physical clinic at their office on Wednesday, May 31.  Students will need to call the health department at 665-8491 to schedule an appointment.  Sports physical forms can be picked up in the high school office.  The physical form must be signed by a parent in order for the health department to complete the physical.  If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Sheri at 323-5272 ext. 30.

 

COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASSES

 

A Community Education Survey completed this winter has prompted the school to offer a Computer Literacy Class open to the public. 

 

This class will be open to anyone in the Adair County R-II School District and will run in conjunction with our 21st Century Community Learning Center program.  Tiger Pride Students, under the direction of Martha Reese, will act as mentors to adult participants.

 

Content of the class will include basic computer skills such as “surfing” the Internet and word processing.  Instruction and specific topics will be based on the needs of the class.

 

The classes will be held on Thursday, April 6 and Thursday, April 20 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the high school business room.  The cost will be $5 per class.  Please call the school at 323-5272 to register.

 

BREAKFAST/LUNCH MENU

 

Breakfast each day includes milk and juice.  The following items are offered daily for students to choose from in lieu of the main entrée: yogurt, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or salad bar (students in grades 7-12 only).
