PLAYGROUND COMES TO FRUITION
On
December 3rd, 2013, the Brashear Elementary School held a ribbon cutting
ceremony for their new Earth Friendly Outdoor Classroom/Playground. The project started in 2008 with members of
the community who were interested in updating and improving the playground for
the elementary students. Parents,
grandparents, teachers, staff members, and patrons of the district started
raising money through various fundraisers:
cook book sales, raffles, pasta sales, spaghetti suppers, Olan Mills
sales, and private donations. A
Missouri Department of Natural Resources Grant, an America’s Farmers Grow
Communities Monsanto Fund Grant donated by Frank and Vicki Collop, and MFA Oil
Foundation Grants combined with our previous fundraising efforts helped us
reach our goal of an Earth Friendly Outdoor Classroom/Playground. Through the DNR grant, a recycling program
has been started in our district and community. Recycle bins have been placed on the playground for community
use.
Our
Earth Friendly Classroom/Playground contains 30,765 recycled milk jugs and
3,054 recycled tires for a total of 61,890 pounds of material diverted from
landfills. The total project cost was
$47,539.
