Ten students were inducted into the Brashear Chapter of National Honor Society on February 12. The new members are Drew Moyer and Dani Moyer, son and daughter of Mark and Ann Moyer; Brooke Crandall, daughter of Kenny and Teri Crandall; Brooke Salter, daughter of Lonnie and Kim Salter; Danny Clarkson, son of Doug and Paula Clarkson; Bill Elam, son of Mike and Wanda Elam; Emilee Hardwick, daughter of Robert and CoeAnn Hardwick; Danielle Lowe, daughter of Marty and Paula Lowe; Kristin Osborn, daughter of Jeff and Lisa Osborn; and Holly Hazen, daughter of Craig and Becky Hazen.

They will join nine other members in completing various service and leadership projects throughout the year. Congratulations!

The NHS students would like to thank those who made our recent Valentine sales and Three-Point-A-Thon a success. Monies from these projects will be used to fund a variety of service projects around the school as well as to pay for the NHS spring trip to The New Theatre Restaurant in Kansas City in April.

Academic Bowl season begins on Monday, March 3. We are scheduled to play only 4 games at home, but the dates may have to change due to the basketball schedule. Home games are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.

Varsity team members this year include Alicia Longano, Brock Dodsworth, Brooke Crandall, Katie Thudium, Brent Platz, Jeremiah Osborn, and Danny Clarkson.

Junior High members this year are Bridget Clarkson, Tyler Killen, Andrea Reeves, Stefanie McKim, Kellie Primmer, Kale Moore, and Nathan Osborn.

Jenny Elsea and Brooke Salter will be statisticians for both teams.

Students in Mrs. Thomas's fifth grade classroom are going to be published poets. Ten students' poems have been selected for A Celebration of Young Poets, which will be published in the near future.

The students selected include Samantha Cooper, Shelbie Creason, Devin Dobbins, Alexis Harrelson, Tabitha Killen, Emily Ladwig, Desiree Partin, Katie Stewart, Megan Taylor, and Matt Thomas.

In addition, three students will be published in the Teacher's Selection Anthology. These students are Ashley Collop, Emily Ladwig, and Daniel Smith.

Congratulations to these fine poets.

The 20th Annual Spelling Bee will be held March 27, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

Fifth grade contestants are Tabitha Killen, Daniel Smith, Matt Thomas, Katie Stewart, and alternate Alexis Harrelson.

Sixth grade contestants are Courtney Clarkson, Anthony Chambers, Joshua Owen, Kiley Watson, and alternate Jacob Sweet.

Seventh grade contestants are Jeremy Clay, Christina Scudder, David Anderson, Kale Watson, and alternate Alexis Longano.

Eighth grade contestants are Bridget Clarkson, Tyler Killen, Amanda Powell, Seth Wheeler, and alternate Tyler Blake.

PTS will provide cash awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers. The school will honor students with medals. The public is welcome to attend.

The MSIP (Missouri School Improvement Program) Review Team, made up of DESE officials and area educators, visited our school district February 24-26. The results of the team review will be available to the district in approximately six to eight weeks.

School districts in the state of Missouri are reviewed once every five years to ensure the quality of education provided to Missouri students.

Preparation for this review has taken a considerable number of man-hours from our faculty, staff, and community. I would like to commend everyone’s efforts to make this a successful experience.

One of the strengths cited in the exit conference with the DESE officials is the strong community support that this district enjoys. Thank you for all that you do to support this school district. It is our unfailing hope and desire that we are able to give back to the community through excellent educational experiences and opportunities for our youth.

A huge thank you to all of the parents and local business people who helped make Adair County R-II Schools 4^th Annual Groundhog Job Shadow Day a success. Fifty-seven students from grades 5, 6 and 10 were out on the job on Tuesday, February 4.

Groundhog Job Shadow Day is sponsored by America’s Promise, National School-to-Work Opportunities Office, Junior Achievement and American Society of Association Executives and is a day dedicated to giving young people across America Job Shadowing experiences. Job Shadowing enables kids to shadow a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job, providing an up-close look at how the skills learned in school are put into action in the workplace.

Students returned from their Job Shadowing experience enthusiastic and with a better understanding of how the skills learned in the school environment are used in the "real world" work place. We appreciate the effort put forth by the parents, mentors and businesses involved in making this a successful learning experience for these students.

Construction continues to progress on schedule. The concrete for the gymnasium floor has been poured and the remaining insulation and drywall is being installed.

Installation of the HVAC system, plumbing, electricity and phone lines are all well under way. Also, as you drive by, you may notice the addition of exterior windows.

The projection for the completion of this project is for the end of March to the middle of April. We are looking with great anticipation toward that day.
