ADAIR COUNTY R-II NEWSLETTER
March 1, 2007 Brashear, Missouri
21ST CCLC NEWS
Do you have spring-cleaning to do? Let the 4th-6th Grade Tiger-Pride students help you! "New To You" is a service project/fundraiser scheduled for March 9 & 10, 2007. From 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Friday, you can bring any items you no longer need in your home (except paint/chemicals or large furniture/appliances/machinery). From 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, all donated items will be available in Brashear’s Elementary Gym. All donated items that are not selected by other families on Saturday will be delivered to the Salvation Army in Kirksville. This service costs only $5.00 per family. That charge will allow a family to donate appropriate items as well as choose any items they’d like to have for their home. We hope everyone will participate! Let us help you with your spring-cleaning! Please contact Wendy Kerby at 660-323-5272 ext. 39 with any questions!
Night after night, people are faced with the same question: What should I fix for supper? If this sounds familiar, this course is for you! Become confident in the kitchen and learn to make simple and inexpensive meals with a minimum of fuss. All Brashear students’ families and staff members are welcome to attend this class. This class is free! All you need to bring to the first class is a 9" x 13" casserole dish, and a favorite recipe that has 5 or less ingredients. For the next 3 classes, Tiger-Pride will provide the meat for the meal and participating families will be asked to provide other recipe ingredients (i.e. vegetables, cheese, pasta…). Valinda Terrell (a busy wife, mother and teacher) will be the instructor. All participants can taste special dishes, prepare a main-dish to take home to their family, have a free magazine prescription, etc. This class will be tasty and helpful! We will be meeting from 6-8:00 p.m. in Mrs. Chamber’s Spanish room on Thursdays, March 1, 8, 15 & 29, 2007. Please RSVP by calling Wendy Kerby at 660-323-5272 ext. 39 by Wednesday, February 28 (you do not have to attend every class). See you there!

GROUNDHOG JOB SHADOWING DAY
A huge thank you to all of the parents and local business people who helped make Adair County R-II Schools Groundhog Job Shadow Day a success. Sixty-eight students from grades 5, 7 and 10 were out on the job In February.
Groundhog Job Shadow Day is sponsored by America’s Promise, National School-to-Work Opportunities Office, Junior Achievement and American Society of Association Executives and is a day dedicated to giving young people across America Job Shadowing experiences. Job Shadowing enables kids to shadow a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job, providing an up-close look at how the skills learned in school are put into action in the workplace.
Students returned from their Job Shadowing experience enthusiastic and with a better understanding of how the skills learned in the school environment are used in the "real world" work place. We appreciate the effort put forth by the parents, mentors and businesses involved in making this a successful learning experience for these students.

Spring is Coming, Get Out and Walk!
As an aerobic exercise, walking offers countless health benefits, including heart-healthy perks such as lower blood pressure and cholesterol. It reduces the risk of diabetes, aids in weight loss, improves muscle strength and tone and, as with any exercise regimen, causes mental fitness to skyrocket. This low-impact activity can be enjoyed alone or in the company of friends. Walking is not, however, an exercise that lends itself to excuses. Virtually anyone can do it, anywhere! Briskly walking one mile (brisk usually means 3.5 to 4 miles per hour) burns nearly as many calories as running a mile at a moderate pace, and produces similar fitness and health benefits. Even strolling or slow walking (about 2 miles per hour) has some benefits.
Here's how to get more out of your walk. Try to walk briskly for at least half an hour every day, or one hour four times a week. Make an effort to walk as much as possible taking the opportunity to leave the car at home if you can walk the mile or two to a friend's house. Walk to work, at least part of the way. Get a pedometer and see how many steps you take a day. Aim for 3,000, and then try to work up to at least 5,000 or 10,000 steps a day. So get out there and enjoy the weather, Start Walking!
