PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
SURROGATE PARENT PROGRAM
Pursuant to the requirements of state law 162.997-999-RSMo, the State Board of Education is required to appoint a surrogate parent as such time as it becomes evident that a child with a disability does not have a parent or a person acting as a parent to participate in matters dealing with the provision of special education. For purposes of surrogate parent appointment, "parent" is defined as a biological parent, a guardian, or a person acting as a parent of a child including, but not limited to, a grandparent, a step parent, or a foster parent with whom the child lives. The term does not include the State if the child is a ward of the State. The term does not include a person whose parental rights have been terminated.
The local school district is given the responsibility to determine when a child with a disability who requires special education and who resides in the District is without a parent. The District must notify the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of the need to appoint a surrogate parent. Training for persons serving as surrogate parents will be provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the District.
If you are interested in volunteering to serve as a surrogate parent, more information can be obtained from the Districts’ surrogate parent contact person - the person responsible for the District’s special education program.

INCLEMENT WEATHER
As the winter season approaches, we are reminding parents and students to listen to the local media stations to check on "early dismissals" and/or "no school" bulletins. This information will be given to KTVO television, KHQA television, WGEM television, KIRX radio, KTUF radio, KRXL radio, KLTE radio, KRES radio of Moberly, KMEM radio of Memphis, and KZBK radio of Brookfield. These stations will present dismissal information as soon as decisions have been made. Please do not call the school.
LIBRARY TO OFFER EXTENDED HOURS
As part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school grant, the library media center will offer extended hours this year. It will be open so families can take time to check out books to enjoy together. Our first library time will be on October 12 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. This coincides with the Tiger Pride’s "Lights On Afterschool" event.
Your child does not have to be a part of the Tiger Pride program for your family to participate.
21ST CCLC NEWS
Tiger-Pride before and after-school students have been enjoying learning about Australia! We have had the benefit of having two teachers and a student share about their adventures in Australia as they traveled to "down under" this past summer! Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Stephens and Katie Smith have been great to share their experiences with us! Each month we will be focusing on a different country and look forward to learning more about our world and others from different cultures!
There are still openings for the First Aid/CPR Training to be held from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on October 28, 2006. The next three participants to RSVP can attend this training for free and everyone after that will be charged $25.00. This training will be conducted by the Adair County Ambulance District and the American Heart Association. Participants who successfully complete the training will be certified.
Families with children enrolled in Tiger-Pride need to mark their calendars for 10-12-06! From 5:30-6:30 p.m. we will celebrate the national "Lights On Afterschool" event. We will have a meal, a special computer/slide presentation with lots of great footage of the Tiger-Pride children, displays of autumn crafts and creations and a special Halloween door-prize! We hope everyone can come! Be looking for more information coming soon in your child's planner.

SENIOR PARENTS
Sign up for your FAFSA pin number early. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the federal form which all students attending post-secondary education must fill out before attending college. The form requires this years tax information. We'll be having financial aid night during the first part of February to assist you in filling out this form. Make sure you try to get your taxes done as early as possible this year. Go to http://www.pin.ed.gov/PINWebApp/pinindex.jsp to sign up for your PIN number. This allows you to sign your FAFSA electronically. Getting your PIN number early saves time in submitting your FAFSA later.
SPRING TEST SCORES ARE IN
We will be hosting a testing night on October 9 at 6:00 p.m. Parents of all students are encouraged to attend. We will be handing out your students' results from the MAP tests and the Terra Nova tests. All students who were in grades 1-8 and 10-11 last year were tested. We will also be explaining the results....what they mean to your student, ways they can improve, etc. Watch for more information about this night. Also, students scoring proficient and advanced on the Spring tests will be recognized.

FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE
Breakfast the Best Way to Start the Day!
Today’s busy families have a lot to juggle in the course of a morning. We may forget the importance of a nutritious breakfast, especially for children. Children who eat breakfast have been shown to get higher grades and are less likely to be described as depressed, anxious, fidgety, or irritable by parents and teachers. They also think faster and more clearly, concentrate better, suffer less fatigue, and are less likely to end up in the nurse’s office complaining of tummy aches and dizziness. Breakfast should provide one-fourth to one-third of the day’s energy and nutrient needs. A balanced breakfast should provide some protein, fat and carbohydrate, as well as important nutrients that kids often miss, such as fiber, vitamin C, folate, iron, and calcium.
Quick and easy breakfast ideas:
▪ Blender-quick fruit smoothies made with yogurt and fresh or canned fruit
▪ Cheese and crackers or melted cheese on whole-grain toast with 100% juice
▪ Low-fat yogurt with added fruit and low-fat granola cereal topping
▪ Instant breakfast mixed with low-fat milk and fresh fruit
▪ Peanut butter rolled inside a tortilla with 100% juice
▪ Fruit-filled breakfast bars and yogurt
Quick Breakfast Burrito
Ingredients: 2 eggs 1 whole wheat tortilla
cooking spray 1 slice of your favorite cheese
Preheat medium size frying pan over medium high heat. Spray with cooking spray. Scramble 2 eggs into a bowl, pour into pan. Stir eggs with wooden spoon until eggs are fully cooked. Remove from heat. Place tortilla shell onto plate. Spoon eggs over center of tortilla shell. Place slice of cheese on top and roll.
