Brashear Hosts Bevier Friday in Tri-County Conference Action
The Tigers hope to get into the win column in the new year while the Lady Tigers try to improve their 1-1 record in conference.
In the first 2 games of the new year, the Brashear Tigers had put together a couple of pretty good first half efforts against strong opponents Knox County and Schuyler County. Unfortunately, second half action was a different story in those games. Friday night, the Brashear boys decided to stick around and have a little fun in the second half for a change. Even though Brashear trailed 28-22 at the mid-way point, things began to look up in the 3rd quarter when Kale Watson caught fire for 10 points of his 17 on the night. This enabled the Tigers to head into the 4th quarter with a 43-43 tie. The game remained close to the end with Brashear taking the lead for good in the last 2 minutes. Brashear notched the victory 57-53 for their first win of the year. This improved their conference record to 1-2. Kale Watson led Tiger scorers with 17, followed by Ryan Ferdig with 11, Andrew Linhart with 10, Jacob Shipman with 9, Justin Hazen with 5, Kiley Watson with 3, and Tyler Killen with 2 points. Kary Jennings led the way for Bevier with 21 points, Travis Lovinger had 16, Charles Watson had 5, Brian Shelmadine and Jacob Cress scored 4 each, Chris Britt had 2, and Brandon Smith scored 1 point.
In the girl's game, the Lady Tigers welcomed coach Sara Williams back with a 46-28 win. Williams had been out since the beginning of the season on maternity leave, with assistant coach Breanne Cameron filling in during the interim. The Brashear girls got off to a quick start running up a 13-6 1st quarter lead and going into the locker room with a 28-11 lead. Bevier made some noise in the 3rd quarter, outscoring Brashear by a margin of 12-10, but were unable to sustain their momentum. The leading scorer for Brashear was Kimberly Elsea with 12, followed by ChaRae Cole with 9, Hailee Kelsey with 7, Christina Scudder with 6, Jessi Hill with 6, Chelsey Collop with 4, and Ashley Clarkson with 2 points. Lakan Britt had 10 points for Bevier, Whitney Ratliff added 8, Angel Wolf scored 4, Stephanie Ashenfelter had 4, and Tristen Wilson scored 2 points. The Lady Tigers improved their conference record to 2-1 and their overall record to 6-5.
Both Tiger teams will be playing in the North Shelby tournament next week. The Brashear boys were seeded 8th and face top seeded North Shelby Monday at 8:30. The Lady Tigers drew the 4th seed and will face off against 5th seeded Schuyler County Monday at 7:00.
