Brashear Splits Season Opener at Marion County
The Lady Tigers get their season off to a 1-0 start, but the
Tigers come up short Tuesday night.
The Brashear Lady Tigers had a little better fortunes in the
Marion County gym this year compared to last year when the
Mustangs handed Brashear a 40-17 loss. Brashear got on the board
first with a 3 point bucket and held Marion County at bay despite
the rugged Marion County press that devasted the Tigers last
year. The game stayed close with the score tied at 8 after one
quarter. Brashear managed to hold a 1 point lead at halftime, but
gradually pulled away in the 2nd half to win by a 36-25 margin. 8
free throw points in the fourth quarter helped Brashear seal the
victory. Kimberly Elsea scored 15 for Brashear, with ChaRae Cole
putting in 7, Hailee Kelsey scoring 6, and Jessi Hill, Ashley
Clarkson, Chelsey Collop, and Christina Scudder having a bucket
each. Taylor Spratt led Marion County with 9.
The boys game proved to fast and physical with Marion County
jumping out to an early lead 11-7 at the end of the first
quarter. Brashear kept battling back and stayed within 2, 21-19
at halftime. Brashear put together a couple of quick buckets in
the 3rd quarter going ahead 23-21. After that, the Tigers seemed
to lose focus in a very physical 3rd quarter with Marion County
reeling off 11 unanswered points. The Mustangs led 36-25 at the
end of 3 quarters and completed the victory by a score of 50-34.
Jacob Shipman put in 10 points for Brashear, Justin Hazen had 7,
Andrew Linhart had 6, Kale Watson and Ryan Ferdig each scored 4,
and Kiley Watson had 3 points. Nathan Meyers led Marion County
with 27 points.
Brashear will be in action again Monday night at the Novinger
Tournament. The girls are seeded 5th and will face 4th seeded
Milan at 7:00 p.m. followed by the 8th seeded boys against top
seeded Green City at 8:15 p.m.
