Marion County Visits Brashear Tuesday
The Tigers and Mustangs kicked off their seasons at Marion County
and met for the rematch in Brashear.
The Brashear Lady Tigers managed to start off their season with a
win against Marion County back in November and were hoping for a
repeat performance. Getting two wins against a Marion County team
that had totally dominated Brashear last season seemed like a
tough assignment, but the Lady Tigers were up to the task. Marion
County's game plan seemed to be to press hard and run the court
for some transition points. Unlike last season, Brashear was able
to work through the press and hustled to get back on defense. By
the end of the 1st quarter, Brashear had put up a 14-9 lead. Both
offenses stalled in the 2nd quarter and Brashear went into
half-time leading 18-12. The 3rd quarter continued the defensive
struggle started in the 2nd quarter with Brashear leading 23-15
after 3 quarters of play. The scoring drought finally ended in
the 4th quarter with Brashear outscoring Marion County 18-9 to
cruise to a 41-24 win. Christina Scudder led all scorers with 15
points for Brashear. Kimberly Elsea was also in double digits
with 12, Hailee Kelsey had 6, and ChaRae Cole, Jessi Hill, Ashley
Clarkson, and Chelsey Collop each had 2 points. Savannah Spratt
led Marion County with 9, Taylor Spratt had 6, Heidi Tuley scored
4, Maggie Hastings had 3, and Jenny Mitchell scored 2 points. In
an interesting bit of trivia, each of Brashear's starters have
been leading scorer at some point during the season. I suspect
that very few teams can claim this kind of balanced scoring
attack.
The boys game proved to be a very exciting affair with Marion
County taking an early 8-2 lead before Brashear battled back to
tie the score 13-13 after 1 quarter. The Tigers managed to gain a
27-23 lead by half-time. The two teams continued to battle hard
with Brashear maintaining a 41-38 lead after 3 quarters of play.
Marion County caught up to the Tigers midway through the 4th
quarter and managed to take a small lead with under a minute
left. With 30 seconds left in the game, the Tigers were down
47-46. As Brashear worked furiously to regain the lead in that
last half-minute, a couple of errant passes led to breakaway
layups for Marion County who hung on for a 53-46 win. Top scoring
honors for Brashear were shared by Justin Hazen and Kale Watson
with 14 each. Andrew Linhart and Jacob Shipman each had 6 points,
and Kiley Watson, Ryan Ferdig, and Tyler Killen each had 2
points. Chester Donath had 19 for Marion County, Dakota Bainter
had 12, Josh Hagerly scored 8, Josh Mitchell had 6, Nathan Meyers
had 4, and Ben Hirner and Justin Tobias had 2 points each.
Brashear will host Atlanta Friday night for homecoming.
