Brashear Plays First Round Games in North Shelby Tournament

The #4 seeded Lady Tigers played #5 Schuyler County while the #8 seeded Tigers faced #1 seed North Shelby.

The Lady Tigers got off to a quick start Monday scoring 5 unanswered points against Schuyler County in their 1st round game of the North Shelby Tournament. Schuyler made some adjustments and bounced back to take the lead going into the half. A lot of credit for Schuyler's offensive surge goes to Allison Burt who fired in 4 3-pointers during Schuyler's first half surge. During the second half, Brashear battled back to make the game close all the way. With a little over 3 minutes left and the score tied at 40 all, Brashear began a stall. At the 2 minute mark, Schuyler finally came out to challenge the offense. It looked like Brashear might be able to stall the game all the way to the end for one last shot. As the clock ticked down, a missed Brashear shot gave Schuyler the ball with plenty of time to set up their own last second shot. Schuyler's chance came on an inbound play with less than 10 seconds left with Tahnee Poe breaking free to the basket. Even though she didn't make the shot, Poe drew the foul and sank both free throws to seal the win 42-40. Hailee Kelsey had 14 points for Brashear, Jessi Hill had 9, Kimberly Elsea had 8, Christina Scudder had 4 points and 10 rebounds, ChaRae Cole had 3, and Ashley Clarkson scored 2 points. Schuyler County was led by Allison Burt with 12, Tara Verkuilen and Tahnee Poe with 9 points each, Jackie Roberts and Nicole Winkler with 5 each, and Tensel Sandker with 2 points. Schuyler County will face Scotland County and Brashear will face Atlanta Wednesday night.

The Brashear boys had the unenviable task of taking on defending state champion and 1st seeded North Shelby. Brashear stayed close early trailing by only a 14-12 margin late in the first quarter. A strong balanced scoring attack by North Shelby in the second quarter put Brashear at a 40-18 disadvantage at the halfway mark. During the 2nd half, Christopher Perry poured in 14 points leading North Shelby to a 61-26 victory. For Brashear, Jacob Shipman, Ryan Ferdig, and Kale Watson each scored 6 points, and Andrew Linhart, Josiah Belzer, Kale Moore, and Tyler Killen each had 2 points. Perry led the Raiders with 18, Landon Daniel and Ryan Trenhaile each had 11, Brett Craigmyle and Justin Bevill each scored 9, and Tyler Oho had 3 points. North Shelby will face LaPlata and Brashear will face Atlanta Wednesday.

In other first round action, the Scotland County girls defeated Atlanta 66-31 and the LaPlata boys defeated Atlanta 75-34.
