Brashear at Marion County Tuesday Night

The Marion County Mustangs start their season with a pair of hard fought wins over the visiting Brashear Tigers.

The girls game was a slow starter with both teams remaining scoreless deep into the 1st quarter. Marion County finally scored 1st and then continued on to run up a 10-2 lead at the end of the first frame. Brashear began to show a little life in the 2nd closing the half trailing 16-10. Brashear spent most of the 2nd half trailing by 3 and twice closed to within 1 in the 4th, the last time with under 2 minutes left. A little sloppy ball handling and 8 4th quarter points for Marion County from the charity stripe doomed Brashear. The Mustangs picked up the win 32-25. Brashear's scoring was led by Christina Scudder who came off the bench for 6 2nd half points. Kimberly Elsea had 5, Ashley Clarkson, Hailee Kelsey, and Jessi Hill each had 4, and Chelsey Collop scored 2 points. Maggie Hastings scored 13 for Marion County, Taylor Spratt had 9, Jenny Mitchell had 5, Jordan Johnson and Kelsey Tuley had 2 each and Ranay Sharpe had 1 point.

 

The boys game was also a rough, hard fought game. Brashear jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Marion County pulled within 3 at 15-12 after 1 quarter. The game continued to be nip and tuck with Brashear holding a slim 26-25 halftime lead. Neither team could get the upper hand in the 3rd quarter which ended in a 39-39 tie. Brashear finally got the upper hand early in the 4th quarter and held a 7 point lead with about 3 minutes left, but ultimately couldn't take care of the ball and let their lead dwindle to 49-48. With the clock running down, Marion County scored 2 buckets in the last 5 seconds to pull off the come from behind 52-49 victory. Jacob Shipman led Brashear with 16, Kiley Watson had 10, Ryan Ferdig scored 7, Justin Hazen and Matt Thomas had 6 points each, and Kale Watson and Trae Treasure each scored 2 points. Nathan Meyers lead Marion County with 23, Dakota Bainter added 10, Josh Mitchell had 6, Ben Hirner and Josh Hirner each had 4, Ryan Sharpe scored 3, and Billy Goodpasture had 2 points.

 

Brashear's next action will come Monday night at the Novinger Tournament.
