LaPlata Hosts Brashear In Tri-County Conference Action Tuesday
The home court was good to LaPlata as the boys reeled off a 76-37 win over Brashear and the Lady Bulldogs squeaked by Brashear 59-57 in double overtime.
The Brashear Tigers came to LaPlata with the unenviable job of trying to slow down the Bulldog scoring machine. Putting up some offense of their own would be a nice bonus too. Brashear seemed to be meeting those goals early on before LaPlata opened up a 17-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Bulldogs continued to find the range and stepped up their defensive pressure to extend their lead to 37-18 at half and 71-27 at the end of 3. During the 4th, LaPlata’s offense finally cooled down as they picked up the 76-37 win. Scoring for Brashear were Matt Thomas with 10, Kale Watson with 9, Justin Hazen had 7, David Anderson had 4, Jacob Shipman had 3, and Ryan Ferdig and Jacob Owen had 2 points each. LaPlata was paced by Jordan Smith with 18. Curtiss Bunch had 12, Matt Fouch had 11, David Fouch scored 10, Jesse Schrader had 9, Dusty Baker chipped in 6, Mike Eitel and Drew Hays had 3 each, and Nick Lovingier and Zach Small had 2 points each.
The girls’ game saw LaPlata off to a quick start running up a 20-9 lead by early in the 2nd quarter. The Lady Tigers finally got a few things working late in the 2nd quarter and went into halftime trailing by only a margin of 22-21. The 2nd half was a see-saw battle with neither team able to pull away from the other. In the last minute of the 4th quarter, Brashear found themselves down by a bucket 49-47. As the last seconds ticked away, the ball found it’s way to Christina Scudder in the paint. As she went up for the shot, she was fouled. With 1 second showing on the clock, she downed a pair of free throws to put the game into overtime. In overtime, it was Lady Tiger Jesse Hill who drove to the baseline and fired in a last second shot to knot the game 55 all and force a 2nd overtime. As the 2nd overtime wound down, Brashear was once again down a bucket 59-57 when the magic faded and a last second shot failed to find it’s mark giving LaPlata the win.
Brashear’s Kimberly Elsea led all scorers with 24. Christina Scudder and Ashley Clarkson had 8 each, Jessi Hill and Chelsey Collop added 7 each, and Hailee Kelsey had 3 points. For LaPlata, Eden Meade had 18, Justine Bane had 11, Alethea Hansen added 9, Miranda Easley had 8, Hali Hagar scored 7, Lindsey Kimmel had 4, and Kelcey Williams had 2 points.
