North Shelby Tournament Gets Underway After 1 Day Weather Delay

Schuyler County and Brashear girls and LaPlata and Marion County boys get 1st round wins.

After bad weather forced postponement of Monday's first round games, play finally got underway Tuesday at the North Shelby Tournament. The Schuyler County girls squared off against the LaPlata girls in the first game of the evening. Schuyler County jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the 1st quarter and continued to outscore LaPlata in every frame as they coasted to a 66-43 win. The Lady Rams were paced by Jackie Roberts and Tahnee Poe with 16 and 15 points. Nicole Winkler added 9, Katilyn Stump and Tara Verkuilen had 8 each, Kanada Nelson scored 6, and Elizabeth Jones scored 4 points. Justine Bane led the way for LaPlata with 18 points. Eden Meade chipped in 8, Lindsey Kimmel had 5, Kelsey Williams had 4, and Alethea Hanson, Laura Tuggle, Gara Curtis, and Michell Pickens each scored 2 points.

In the second game of the night, the LaPlata and Schuyler County boys met. Even though Schuyler County had a strong start and led 18-16 after 1 quarter, LaPlata just had too much offense, easily outpacing Schuyler as they coasted to a 71-44 victory. Matt and David Fouch led LaPlata with 16 and 13 points. Jesse Schrader had 9, Dusty Baker had 8, Nick Lovingier had 7, Curtiss Bunch added 6, Mike Eitel scored 5, Jordan Smith had 3, and Josh Hartsock and Keaton Hamilton scored 2 each. Schuyler County also had a pair of players in double figures. Logan Shively had 16, and Jacob Winkler had 11 points. Tyler Green added 8, Tyler Weaver had 3, Jordan Neagle and Trevor Beeler each had 2, and Greg Buckallew and Eric Duncan scored 1 point each.

In the 2nd girls contest of the night, the Brashear Lady Tigers squared off with the Knox County Lady Eagles. The contest got off to a slow start with neither team scoring until 2 and a half minutes into the game. Knox County finally got on the board with a pair of free throws to break the ice, but neither team got much offense going leaving the game tied at 4-4 at the end of the 1st quarter. Things livened up during the 2nd and Brashear led 17-13 at halftime. The game was decided in the 3rd quarter when Brashear reeled off 15 points while holding Knox County to a pair of free throws. The Lady Tigers went on to pick up the win by a margin of 40-29. Brashear had 2 players in double figures. Hailee Kelsey picked up a double-double with 10 boards and 14 points, Kimberly Elsea scored 13, Jessi Hill added 7, and Christina Scudder came off the bench with 6 points. Knox County was led by Kisha Tungate with 9, Amanda Woods had 8, Lorrie Peters chipped in 6, Becca Mallet had 4, and Jessie Stout scored 2 points.

In the final boy's game, Marion County downed Knox County 55-46. Marion County managed to jump out to a 28-21 halftime lead which they extended to 42-30 after 3 frames. Nathan Meyers led Marion County with 20, Dakota Bainter added 17, and Ryan Sharpe had 8. Dennis Dent led Knox County with 12, Cory Shultz added 10 and David McMahon scored 9.
