Brashear and Schuyler County Girls Meet at North Shelby Tournament
The Lady Rams proved to be too much for the Lady Tigers Thursday.
Sometimes getting on the board first doesn't necessarily win games. Brashear jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Schuyler County answered with 9 points of their own. Brashear knotted the game at 9 all late in the 1st quarter, but the rest of the half belonged to the Lady Rams. Schuyler County pushed their lead to 15-9 at the end of the 1st and used a strong fast-breaking attack to go into halftime leading 28-13. The two teams battled to a stalemate in the 2nd half with each team adding 10 to their halftime totals. Schuyler County's Kaitlin Stump led all scorers with 11, Tahnee Poe and Nicole Winkler added 8 each, Jackie Roberts scored 6, Tara Verkuilen had 3, and Kanada Nelson scored 2 points. Christina Scudder came off the bench with 7 points to lead Brashear. Hailee Kelsey had 6, Kimberly Elsea had 5, Chelsey Collop had 3, and Ashley Clarkson scored 2 points.
In boys championship bracket action, LaPlata easily defeated Marion County 77-44. Matt Fouch, David Fouch, and Jordan Smith were all in double figures for LaPlata with 21, 19, and 15 points. For Marion County, Dakota Bainter had 11, and Nathan Meyers scored 9 points.
In girls consolation bracket action, LaPlata defeated Knox County 48-45 in overtime. The game had been tied at 38 all at the end of regulation. Amanda Woods led Knox County with 17 points. Justine Bane led LaPlata with 14 points.
In the boys consolation bracket game, Knox County edged Schuyler County in overtime on a game-winning 3-pointer by Daniel McMahon at the buzzer. The Rams had led the entire overtime until the last second shot by Knox. Dennis Dent and Daniel McMahon were in double figures for Knox County with 18 and 17 points. Jacob Winkler, Tyler Green, and Logan Shively were in double figures for Schuyler County with 22, 11, and 10 points.
