Atlanta JH Basketball Tournament Underway November 10, 2008
Brashear and Macon County girls and Green City and Bevier boys are Monday night winners.
The Brashear Lady Tigers and the Bevier Wildcats proved to be a well-matched pair of opponents. The score was tied 2-2 after the 1st quarter and Brashear led by a slim 7-6 margin at the half. The Lady Tigers managed to go ahead 10-7 after 3 quarters, but Bevier came back to tie the game 12-12 at the end of regulation play. The first overtime produced no scoring leaving the game still tied 12-12 and each team scored 2 points in the 2nd overtime to leave the scored knotted 14-14. Brashear finally prevailed in the 3rd overtime winning 18-17. Katie Smith scored 8 points for Brashear, Shelby Salter added 5, Kristin Love had 3, and Meredith Thomas scored 2 points. For Bevier, Beth Ashenfelter had 7 points, Cheyenne Shelmadine had 4, and Sylvanna Couch, Hallie Smith, and Haley Cooper scored 2 points each.
The boys' contest between Brashear and Bevier was also hotly contested with Bevier leading 11-10 after one quarter and 21-20 at the half. Bevier continued to hold a one-point 29-28 lead after 3 quarters, but Brashear tied the game in the 4th until Bevier swiped an inbound pass to score a layup with 7 seconds left to grab the 38-36 win over Brashear. Tiger Taren Treasure scored 11 points, Joe Clarkson had 8, Joseph Woods added 7, Nick Thomas had 6, and Hayden Housman scored 4 points. For Bevier, Aaron Peter scored 15, Jonathan Basler had 8, Brett Puekert had 6, McKenzey Pipes and Logan Christensen scored 4 points each, and Jesse Ashenfelter scored 1 point.
In other 1st round action, the top-ranked Macon County girls downed Bucklin 28-18 and the top-seeded Green City boys beat Bucklin 58-18.
