LaPlata at Brashear Tuesday December 15, 2009
The Bulldogs spoiled the Tigers home opener in Tri-County Conference action.
The Brashear Lady Tigers were in trouble early as LaPlata opened the game with an 18-0 run. By halftime, LaPlata had built a 39-8 lead and never looked back on their way to a 66-12 victory. For Brashear, Sydney Slavin scored 4 points, and Shelby Salter, Katie Smith, Abby McKim, and Chandi March scored 2 points each. LaPlata's scoring was led by Rachel Shahan with 19 points, Emily Snodgrass had 13, MaKay Belt added 11, Emily Heissler had 8, and Jeana Bane, Mallory Eitel, and Brittany Bingham scored 5 points each.
The boys' game was a rematch of the Novinger Tournament semi-final game where LaPlata won 60-32. Despite looking solid in the early going of that game, Brashear crumbled and allowed LaPlata to run away with the game. In the rematch, Brashear got on the scoreboard first and established a 15-12 lead after one quarter. Brashear continued to play solid ball in the 2nd quarter despite a lopsided 10-4 foul situation that benched a starter and forced some defensive adjustments by the Tigers. Despite the adversity, the Tigers extended their lead to 34-28 at halftime. In the third quarter LaPlata used their full court pressure to gain a slim 39-38 lead, but the entire 2nd half was a see-saw battle. It was anybody's game down to the last minute when Brashear's Jay Scudder fouled out with 57 seconds left sending Taylor Wheeler to the line for a pair of free throws that gave LaPlata a 3 point lead. From that point on, Brashear had to foul to try to get the ball back and LaPlata's 10 fourth quarter points from the charity stripe were too much for Brashear to overcome allowing LaPlata to claim a 59-54 win. Matt Thomas led Brashear's scoring with 20 points, Cody Snelling added 14, Adam Songer had 10, Jay Scudder scored 6, and Anthony Ambrosia scored 4 points. For LaPlata, Hayden Fouch scored 22 points, Taylor Wheeler had 17, Christian Bunch had 11, and Birdie Buck scored 9 points.
