Brashear Baseball Takes 2nd in State June 3, 2010
The Tigers post-season winning streak ends at 6 as Brashear falls 6-1 to Concordia.
The Brashear baseball team was living the dream, advancing through the post season to reach the Missouri Class 1 baseball championship game. No other Brashear team had previously advanced to the final four, although the 1996 team played in the quarter final game. This spring's post season hadn't been an easy journey, as Brashear had recorded come from behind victories over Canton, Atlanta, Cairo, and Sturgeon on their way to reaching the final four. Although the Tigers scored 1st in the semi-final game with Cooter, they had to come back from a 2-2 tie in the 4th to win 3-2. Although the Tigers had plenty of experience with adversity, they weren't ready for what happened in the 1st inning of the championship game. Concordia took advantage of some early control problems by Brashear started Hayden Coin turning 2 walks, 2 hits, and an error into 4 runs. Brashear finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd as Nick Thomas hit a 2-out single, followed by a Matt Thomas single and a Cody Snelling single that scored Nick Thomas. The rally was cut short when Jay Scudder hit a ball to the right side that struck the runner Snelling ending the inning. Meanwhile, Coin settled in on the mound holding Concordia scoreless through the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings despite still have some control issues. Concordia threatened in the 3rd, when 3 2-out walks loaded the bases, but Brashear 3rd baseman Nick Thomas snagged a hard-hit line drive to end the inning. Concordia started off the 5th inning with a double, bringing Matt Thomas on in relief of Coin. A 1-out single made the score 5-1. Concordia would seal the win with another run in the 7th making the final score 6-1.
A welcome home rally will be held Thursday June 10, 2010 at the Brashear School at 6 p.m. to celebrate the Tigers' 2nd place finish at state.
