Brashear Basketball at Bevier January 14, 2011

The visiting Tigers spoil Bevier's homecoming with a pair of Tri-County Conference wins.

The Brashear Lady Tigers took a 9-7 lead after one quarter of play and extended it to a 27-19 margin at the half-way point in the game. Bevier stopped the bleeding after halftime and outscored Brashear 13-11 to close the gap to 38-32 after three quarters. Bevier took advantage of poor Lady Tiger free throw shooting in the 4th to make the game a real nail-biter, but Brashear hung on for a 44-43 win. Stephanie Elsea and Abby McKim were in double figures for Brashear with 11 and 10 points, Shelby Salter added 8, Meredith Thomas had 7, Katie Smith had 4, and Miranda Creason and Sydney Slavin scored 2 points each. For Bevier, Cheyenne Shelmadine scored 14 points, Valle Wilson had 10, Taylor Hedworth added 8, Beth Ashenfelter had 7, and Dominica Prokup and Memphis Buster scored 2 points each.

Scoring was scarce in the early minutes of the boys' game with the game knotted at 4-4 almost midway through the 1st quarter. Brashear started to find the range and quickly increased their score to 10 points before going stagnant in the late 1st and early 2nd quarters, allowing Bevier to pull ahead 12-10. Brashear stayed close, but couldn't regain the lead and were within 3 points when a 3-point shot at the halftime buzzer put Bevier up 24-18. The series of wind sprints that Brashear ran before heading to the halftime locker room evidently didn't provide much inspiration as they slipped behind 36-24 in the 3rd quarter before finally finding their rhythm in the late 3rd to finish with a 39-38 lead. Although Bevier stayed close during the early parts of the 4th quarter, a flurry of 3-point shots in the last 2 minutes sealed the deal giving Brashear a 67-55 win. For Brashear, Adam Songer had 21 points, Cody Snelling had 20, Hayden Housman scored 12, Jay Scudder had 5 points, Nick Thomas added 4, Joseph Woods and Taren Treasure had 2 points each, and Joe Clarkson scored 1 point. Bevier was paced by Brett Peukert with 16, Jesse Ashenfelter added 11, McKenzy Pipes and Wade Teter had 7 each, Andrew Peter had 5, and Aaron Peter and Cody Faught scored 4 points each.
