Brashear Teams Split at North Shelby Tournament January 21, 2011
The Lady Tigers get a big win over Atlanta while the Tigers fall to host North Shelby.
The Brashear girls wasted no time in Friday's 7th place game against Atlanta. Using a stifling defense, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 16-5 lead after the 1st quarter and rolled up a 33-13 lead by halftime. Brashear was up 47-17 after 3 quarters and cruised to a 51-18 win. Brashear had 3 players in double figures. Meredith Thomas scored 15 points, Stephanie Elsea and Shelby Salter had 11 each, Abby McKim added 6, Sydney Slavin had 4, and Katie Smith and Olivia Thompson scored 2 points each. For Atlanta, Shelby Tipton scored 12 points, Katy Baker had 4, and Ashton Ross scored 2 points.
The Brashear boys looked like they had host North Shelby on the ropes as the Tigers jumped out to an 11-6 lead after the 1st quarter. Brashear extended the lead to 16-6 before a barrage of whistles in the 2nd quarter put North Shelby on the free throw line 14 times to Brashear's 0, allowing North Shelby to climb back in the game and take a 20-18 lead into halftime. After the half, Brashear pulled ahead 26-22 and led until North Shelby hit a bucket with 5 seconds left to take a 29-28 lead after 3 quarters. The 4th quarter turned out to be a repeat of the 2nd quarter as North Shelby benefited from 24 trips to the charity stripe compared to 6 for Brashear. Despite outscoring North Shelby 34 to 23 from the field, Brashear couldn't overcome the 27-4 free throw advantage and fell to North Shelby 50-38. Adam Songer, Cody Snelling, and Nick Thomas scored 7 points each for Brashear, Hayden Housman and Jay Scudder had 6 each, Zach Reeves had 3, and Taren Treasure scored 2 points. For North Shelby, John Stoneburner scored 27 points, Alex Thrasher had 13, Dalton Mettes had 4, and Michael Orr and Kendle Smith scored 3 points each.
