Brashear Basketball at Canton January 28, 2011
Canton celebrated a pair of homecoming victories Friday night.
In Friday night's girls' game, Brashear and Canton traded baskets during the first quarter. Each team had 5 baskets, but Brashear's were all 2-point shots while 4 of Cantons were 3-pointers giving them a 14-10 edge after the first quarter. Brashear closed the gap to 21-20 at halftime and were still down only 25-24 after 3 quarters. Although Brashear held Canton to a single basket in the 4th quarter, Canton picked up 14 points from the charity stripe to win 42-32. Stephanie Elsea scored 8 points for Brashear, Shelby Salter, Meredith Thomas, and Sydney Slavin had 6 each, Abby McKim had 4, and Olivia Thompson scored 2 points. For Canton, Katie Shuman and Kristyn Caldwell scored 16 points each, Monica Campen had 7, and Lauren Janney scored 3 points.
The Canton boys started the game with some torrid shooting, putting an 8-0 run on Brashear. Brashear adjusted and closed to within 3 by mid-quarter, but Canton mounted another scoring surge late to lead 22-15 at the end of the first quarter. As the pace of the game started to bring fresh legs from the bench, Canton quickly extended their lead to 41-22 at halftime. Canton continued their dominance in the 3rd quarter holding Brashear to a pair of free throws while extending their lead to 56-24 on their way to a 62-34 win. For Brashear, Hayden Housman scored 6 points, Cody Snelling added 5, Adam Songer, Taren Treasure, and Jay Scudder had 4 each, Joseph Woods, Nick Thomas, and Joe Clarkson had 3 each, and Zach Reeves scored 2 points. Canton was led by Nick Janney with 17 points, Colt Carper had 13, Steffen Simmons and Austin Hoewing scored 10 each, David McReynolds had 6, and Rockne DeCoster, Garrett Serbin, and Reece Carmichael scored 2 points each.
