Brashear and Marion County are double-winners.
The 82nd annual Brashear Tournament got underway Monday night with 4 first round games. The 1st seed Marion County girls started the night off with a 50-16 win over Kirksville JV. The 2nd seed Marion County boys followed up with a 71-37 win over Macon County. The 4th seed Brashear girls downed Macon County 34-30 and the bracket-busting 6th seed Brashear boys upset 3rd seed Knox County 60-54.
The Brashear girls got on the scoreboard 1st, but Macon County stayed with them every step of the way, with Brashear leading 10-6 after the 1st quarter and 17-14 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Macon County had tied the score 22-22, but Brashear retook the lead in the 4th and held on for a 34-30 win. Brashear's Meredith Thomas scored 11 points, Stephanie Elsea, Katie Smith, and Sydney Slavin had 6 points each, Abby McKim added 3, and Shelby Salter scored 2 points. For Macon County, Hanna Souther scored 9 points, Cassandra Peterson had 8, Sara Duncan had 5 points, Shelbie Nolte had 4, and Sierra Reade and Emily Timmerman scored 2 points each.
The Brashear boys used some hot perimeter shooting and pushed the pace to take a 17-12 lead against Knox County after 1 quarter and a 33-18 lead at halftime. Brashear maintained their momentum after halftime, extending their lead to 47-25 after 3 quarters. Knox County caught fire in the 4th quarter, scoring 29 points, but Brashear knocked down 7 out of 10 free throws along with a few timely buckets to stifle the Knox County rally and hold on for a 60-54 win. For Brashear, Cody Snelling scored 20 points, Nick Thomas added 13, Adam Songer had 8, Zach Reeves had 7, Hayden Housman and Jay Scudder had 4 each, Taren Treasure had 3, and Joseph Woods scored 1 point. Knox County's Justin Reeves scored 16 points, Royce Poore had 13, Cole Sutton had 9, Leighton McCabe had 8, Kellen Gillaspy had 6, and Brady Morton scored 2 points.
