Bevier Over Brashear in Softball Sectionals
A large crowd turned out at Kirksville's North Park for the Sectional matchup between Class 1 District 11 Champions Brashear and Class 1 District 12 Champions Bevier. Brashear was the visiting team on the scoreboard and went 1-2-3 in the top of the first, then Bevier went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. Both teams were scoreless in the 2nd, although Brashear managed to get 3 runners aboard. The Lady Tigers struck for their 1st run in the top of the 3rd as Meredith Thomas reached on an error with 2 outs and Ashley Moncrief singled her home. Brashear added 2 more runs in the 5th as Meredith Thomas led off with a single, Shelby Salter tripled, and Cierra Hines singled to bring Salter home putting Brashear up 3-0. Brashear added a 4th run in the 6th as Alexa Acton singled, Alli Garrett doubled, and Meredith Thomas brought Acton home with a single. Bevier finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th as Memphis Buster hit a leadoff triple and was brought home by a Cheyenne Shelmadine single. Brashear got their 5th run in the top of the 7th as Kristen Love hit a leadoff double, stole 3rd, and came home on a passed ball. Beth Ashenfelter started the Bevier rally with a one-out single in the bottom of the 7th. Shiloh Wilson hit a 2 out single, followed by a walk by Memphis Buster to load the bases. Dominica Prokup delivered an rbi single to close the margin to 5-2 bringing Cheyenne Shelmadine to the plate. Shelmadine battled through a 12-pitch at bat, finally hammering a ball to right center that went through the outfield fence, but it was ruled a home run giving Bevier a 6-5 win. For Brashear, Meredith Thomas, Ashley Moncrief, Shelby Salter, Cierra Hines, Kristen Love, Alexa Acton, and Alli Garrett had hits. For Bevier, Memphis Buster, Dominica Prokup, Cheyenne Shelmadine, Sylvanna Couch, Beth Ashenfelter, and Shiloh Wilson had hits. Memphis Buster recorded the win for Bevier striking out 6 while giving up 10 hits. Cierra Hines took the loss for Brashear striking out 8 while surrendering 8 hits. Bevier will face the winner of the Silex-Harrisburg game.
