Atlanta JH Tournament Saturday November 12, 2011
Atlanta Boys and Brashear Girls take first.
The Brashear girls and Bucklin girls faced off Saturday night for the tournament championship. The Bucklin girls had won the regular season game 37-24 and were undefeated on the season. As the game got underway, it soon became apparent that is was going to be a rough and tumble affair with both teams committing a lot of fouls early on. Both teams were in the bonus before halftime. Brashear got on the scoreboard 1st and held an 8-6 lead after one quarter and a 14-9 lead at halftime. Bucklin came out charged up after the half and took a 23-17 lead by the end of the third quarter. With foul totals climbing at an alarming rate, it became obvious that free throws would play a key roll in the outcome. The charity stripe wasn't particularly kind to either team, but Brashear hit enough down to stretch along with a few key buckets to rally for a 28-27 upset win. Mandy Taylor scored 10 points for Brashear, Allison Thompson had 6, Caitlee Hall had 4, Sidney Sykes and Abby Hall had 3 each, and Abby Kerby scored 2 points. For Bucklin, Rachel Akins scored 12 points, Cheyene Peterson had 6, Caley Jackson had 5, Savannah Jochem had 4, and JOdy Brock scored 2 points.
The Atlanta boys outscored Green City 56-50 to win the boys' title. Collan Thrasher scored 17 points for Atlanta, Garrett West had 12, Lane Waddle had 9, Justin Grigsby had 8, Korbin Gunnels had 5, Marty Halley had 4, and Chase Wait scored 1 point.
LaPlata topped Bucklin 50-39 in the boys' third place game.
