Brashear Tournament Monday February 6, 2012
The 83rd annual Brashear Tournament got underway Monday night. In the first game of the night, the 2nd seeded Knox County girls jumped out to a 43-20 lead at halftime on their way to a 76-31 win over Atlanta. Hannah Strange and Kathleen Hinkle were in double figures with 16 and 11 for Knox County and Shalyla Collier led Macon County with 10.
Next up, the 3rd seeded North Shelby boys and Atlanta. The game was very competitive in the 1st half with North Shelby leading 27-23 at the intermission, but North Shelby proved too much for Atlanta in the 2nd half, rolling to a 52-38 win. Michael Orr and Kendle Smith were in double figures for North Shelby with 16 and 11 and Lance Webber and Mick Garnett scored 16 and 11 for Atlanta.
The 3rd game of the evening was between the 3rd seeded Macon County girls and Novinger. Macon County took the early lead and were up 30-19 at halftime. Novinger made a furious comeback run late in the game, but ended up falling short with Macon County winning 51-44. Sara Duncan and Shelbie Nolte were in double figures for Macon County as were Chloe Hubbard and Emily Reardon with 15 and 10 for Novinger.
The final game of the night featured the number 2 seed Novinger boys vs Brashear. Novinger opened the game with a 5-0 run, but Brashear quickly answered as the two teams battled through the 1st quarter with Novinger holding a 14-12 lead at it's conclusion. The game stayed close in the early going of the 2nd, but Novinger exploded for 29 points in the later going to take a 43-23 lead into halftime. Novinger continued their dominance in the 2nd half, winning by a final margin of 76-42. Joe Clarkson scored 25 points for Brashear, Hayden Housman and Taren Treasure had 7 each, and Joseph Woods scored 3 points. Trevor Stocks scored 28 points for Novinger, with Jonathon Novinger, Chris Smith, and Justin Klingsmith also being in double figures with 19, 13, and 11 respectively.
