Brashear Tournament Tuesday February 7, 2012
Two first round games were played Tuesday night in the Brashear Tournament. In the girls' contest, #4 seed North Shelby faced Brashear. North Shelby got on the scoreboard first and built a 13-6 lead after one quarter of play. North Shelby built a double digit lead before Brashear made a run and pulled within 26-24 at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, North Shelby rebuilt a double digit lead, but during the 4th quarter, Brashear started chipping away at it. Brashear finally overtook North Shelby on a pair of Meredith Thomas free throws giving Brashear a 50-49 lead with 1:30 left to play. North Shelby tied the game with a minute left and that is the way it stayed until North Shelby got a bucket with under 10 seconds left to win 52-50. Brashear's Meredith Thomas led all scorers with 27 points, Shelby Salter had 10, Ashley Moncrief added 5, Olivia Thompson had 4, and Miranda Creason and Katie Smith scored 2 points each. For North Shelby, Elizabeth Linberger scored 18 points, Mercedes Nute had 12, Ashton Reitz had 7, Ashley Bichsel and Rachel Echternacht had 6 each, and Brianna Cochenour scored 3 points.
In the boys' game, #4 Knox County took on Macon County. Knox County led 17-9 after one quarter, but Macon County matched them point for point in the 2nd quarter with the halftime score being 29-21. Knox County was able to extend their lead to 50-37 after 3 quarters and won by a final score of 70-48. Royce Poore and Andrew Hunolt were in double figures for Knox County with 29 and 13 points. Macon County had 3 players in double figures, Dillan Nolte with 21, Alex Porter with 12 and Aaron Maddox with 10.
