Brashear Tournament Wednesday February 8, 2012
Second round play began Wednesday night at the Brashear Tournament. In the girls' consolation semi-final game, Novinger and Atlanta fought a see-saw battle in the early going with Atlanta leading 14-13 after 1 quarter and 28-27 at the half. Novinger pulled ahead 41-34 after 3 quarters and pulled away for a 68-46 win. Chloe Hubbard led Novinger scoring with 21 points and Katy Baker had 13 for Atlanta.
The boys' consolation semi-final was also a nail-biter as Atlanta led Brashear 8-7 after one quarter and the game was tied at 19-all at the half. The game continued to be close in the 2nd half with the two teams being tied at 29-29 after 3 quarters of play. Brashear broke the tie early in the 4th quarter with a Hayden Housman 3-pointer, but Atlanta ultimately outscored Brashear down the stretch to claim a 42-34 win. Hayden Housman scored 14 points for Brashear, Joe Clarkson added 10, Taren Treasure had 9, and Joseph Woods scored 1 point. For Atlanta, Dylan Hruska scored 14 points, Mick Garnett had 10, Tagan Brookhart had 9, Vincent Elrod had 5, and Zach Brown scored 4 points.
The girls' championship semi-final game between Knox County and Macon County was tied at 11-all after the 1st quarter, but Knox County established a 29-22 lead at halftime. Knox County's relentless defensive pressure took it's toll in the 2nd half as Knox County went on to win by a score of 69-39. Hannah Strange led Knox County with 19 points and Cassandra Peterson was top scorer for Macon County with 12 points.
The boys' championship semi-final was the closest of the night. North Shelby and Novinger battled to a 13-13 tie after one quarter, with Novinger taking a 31-26 lead into halftime. The score was knotted at 42-42 after 3 quarters and the 4th quarter was up for grabs right down to the buzzer with Novinger pulling out a 60-58 win. Chris Smith led Novinger with 20 points and Michael Orr was North Shelby's top scorer with 24 points.
