Canton at Brashear Thursday September 11, 2008
Canton's Tori Niemann pitches a perfect game in the varsity match while the JV contest goes to Brashear.
Neither Brashear or Canton could get any offense going in the first two innings. Canton's leadoff batter was hit by a pitch, but then was promptly erased trying to steal 2nd by Brashear catcher Abby McKim. Canton managed another hit in the 1st but left her stranded. Brashear's Kristen Love sent Canton down in order 1-2-3 in the 2nd. Canton's Tori Niemann struck out the 1st 5 Brashear hitters before Tabby Killen put the ball into play grounding out to 3rd. Canton got on the board in the 3rd as 4 hits produced 3 runs. Canton added another 6 runs in the 5th. Canton started off with a single, but once again Brashear's McKim threw her out at 2nd. Brashear missed chances to get out of the inning when several Canton batters outran throws to 1st on infield hits. Brashear continued to struggle at the plate, but relief pitcher Macy Rogers managed to hold Canton scoreless the rest of the game despite loading the bases with no outs in the 6th. Niemann ended up with 12 K's and the perfect game. Brashear falls to 4-2 overall.
In the JV game, Canton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Brashear came storming back for 5 runs in the bottom of the inning. Kristin Love led off with a single, Emily Ladwig walked, then Katie Stewart drove them in with a 2-rbi double. Ashley Watson walked, then Katelyn Guffey reached on an error bringing in another run. Sydney Slavin followed up with a 2-rbi single. Canton answered with another 4 runs in the 2nd and 2 in the 5th. Meanwhile, Brashear picked up another run in the 3rd as Guffey walked and Slavin drove her in. Brashear went into to bottom of the 5th trailing 8-6, but scored 3 for the 9-8 win as Guffey doubled, Chloe Sykes walked, and Slavin reached on an error. Stephanie Linhart then singled driving in 2 runs and Kristen Love drove in the winning run on an infield groundout.
