Brashear vs Canton October 9, 2008
Canton edges Brashear 1-0 in 8 innings in the District Softball semi-finals at LaPlata.
The district semi-final between Brashear and Canton was a great defensive battle with neither team able to score a run in the first 7 innings. Both teams were hitting the ball and had base runners, but couldn’t manage to bring them home. It looked like Brashear might break things open in the 3rd when Kristen Love led off the inning with a double and Cierra Hines followed with a single that moved Love to 3rd with no outs. Stephanie Elsea then hit a fly ball down the right field line too deep for the 1st baseman and too shallow for the right fielder. Canton’s 2nd baseman managed to sprint to the ball and make the catch, but the Brashear baserunners weren’t tagged up and were unable to score the run. Consecutive strikeouts ended Brashear’s best scoring opportunity of the game. Canton finally pushed the winning run across in the 8th when a leadoff bunt, a sacrifice bunt, and a wild pitch brought the runner to 3rd. Another bunt brought in the winning run and ended Brashear’s season. Stephanie Elsea and Kristen Love both doubled for Brashear with Cierra Hines also having a hit. Macy Rogers took the loss striking out 11. The Lady Tigers finished their season with a 14-5 record overall and took 2nd in the Tri-Conference Conference with a 7-1 mark.
