Brashear Hosts Schuyler County Friday January 9, 2009
The Tigers and Rams split a pair of non-conference basketball games.
The Schuyler County Lady Rams jumped out to an early 26-8 lead after one quarter of play and went into halftime leading 44-19. Brashear played a competitive 3rd quarter trailing 60-32 after the third frame, but Schuyler County still outscored Brashear in the final 2 quarters getting the win by a score of 73-37. For Brashear, Macy Rogers scored 12 points, Abby McKim and Shelby Rogers had 7 each, Emily Ladwig had 4, Caroline Slavin had 3, and Stephanie Elsea and Sydney Slavin scored 2 points each. Schuyler County had 3 players in double figures. Kaitlin Stump scored 31 points, Lesa Ford, had 18, Stephanie March added 15, Kourtney Nelson had 4, Alyssa Buckallew and Brooke Mullinix scored 2 points each, and Cecily Reese had 1 point.
Things looked bad for the Tigers in the 1st half of the boys game with the Rams leading 17-8 at the end of the first quarter and 30-22 at halftime. Five minutes into the 3rd quarter, Brashear managed to grab the lead and hold it 38-36 at the end of the quarter. Schuyler came back in the 4th and retook the lead and it was anyones game as the clock ticked down. Both teams had a chance to break a 50-50 tie in the last minute, but neither succeeded, sending the game into overtime. Schuyler County looked like they might win on free throws as Christian Cunningham sank a pair and Tim Gorman and Jaron Shively added 1 each while Brashear's Matt Thomas answered with a free throw to leave Schuyler with a 54-51 lead. With time getting short, Brashear's Trae Treasure hit a bucket to pull Brashear within 1 at 54-53, then Treasure found Anthony Ambrosia on an inbound for the game-winning bucket with 7 seconds left. The final score was Brashear 55 - Schuyler County 54. Kiley Watson had 17 points for Brashear, Trae Treasure added 11, Ryan Ferdig scored 10, Matt Thomas had 7, and Anthony Ambrosia and Justin Hazen had 5 points each. For Schuyler County, Tim Gorman scored 14 points, Greg Buckallew and Jacob Winkler had 13 each, Jesse Wheeler had 6, Christian Cunningham scored 5, Tyler Reese had 2, and Jaron Shively scored 1 point.
