Brashear, Scotland County, and Canton advance in Class 1 District 11
It was a bad day for underdogs as 3 teams were eliminated from district play by a combined margin of 29-0.
In Class 1 District 11 softball at Canton, the host Lady Tigers downed North Shelby 10-0 and Scotland County topped Marion County by a score of 9-0. Brashear defeated Novinger 10-0 to complete the 1st night of play. Top seed Knox County had a 1st round bye.
A lead-off seeing-eye bunt in the top of the 1st was the only blemish on an otherwise perfect night by Brashear Lady Tiger hurler Cierra Hines. Hines sent the next 15 batters down in order, striking out 12 in Brashear's 5-inning 10-0 shutout of Novinger. The Lady Tigers batted around in the bottom of the 1st, but only scored 3 runs. Brashear scored another 3 runs in the 2nd, but didn't get the timely big hit needed to score more. One of the more interesting plays of the evening happened in the 2nd. With the bases loaded a Brashear popup was ruled infield fly and Brashear's Meredith Thomas tagged from 3rd and scored after a hard collision with the catcher. Novinger held Brashear scoreless in the 3rd and 4th and it looked like the game might go the full 7 innings. Brashear got on the scoreboard again in the 5th as Ashley Moncrief singled, Meredith Thomas tripled, and Cierra Hines reached on a drive to right field and scored on an error. With the score standing at 9-0 and 2 outs, Katie Smith drew a walk and Alexa Acton scored her all the way from 1st base on a bomb over the center fielder's head to end the game after 5 innings 10-0. For Brashear, Ashley Moncrief, Meredith Thomas, and Alexa Acton each had 2 hits with Shelby Salter, Cierra Hines, Kristen Love, and Katie Watson also having hits. Sierra Jacques had Novinger's lone hit.
