LIBRARY REACHES ITS GOAL

Several donations have been made to the library this school year and we would like to take the time to recognize and thank these people.  Our benefactors this month include Donna Sorenson, Dr. Neal Primm, and Helen M. Barkley.  Thanks to the generosity of our patrons we have met our goal, which at the beginning of the year numbered over 700 books with an estimated price tag of $15,000.

Again this month we have books that have been donated to the library in the memory of loved ones who have passed on.  These include:  The Shepherd of the Hills and Christy donated in memory of Pearl and Vaden Ross by their daughter, Donna Sorenson, and seventy- seven books which were donated by Dr. Neal Primm from the estate of his friend and colleague, Professor Arthur Shaffer, of the University of Missouri – St. Louis.  We give our thanks to all of our contributors.

DAYS GONE BY

Did you know Adair County R-II School had the first full day kindergarten in the state of Missouri?  Did you know that sixty and seventy years ago Brashear played basketball in sixteen different towns including towns as far away as Monroe City where people in the community opened their homes to the visiting teams for overnight lodging?

We want to offer our thanks to those who participated on our panel at the March PTS meeting as they offered us a first-hand account of life at the Brashear School from days gone by.  Memories of crowds packed into the elementary gym three deep to watch basketball, ball players hopping the train to go to neighboring schools to play baseball, students riding in the back of a grain truck for their senior trip, the first hot lunch served, prom and so much more were the topics of discussion for the evening.

Our thanks to the participants on the panel who shared their time and wonderful stories with us so generously.  Participants were Roger Selby, Charlene Fisher, Harold Smith, Bonnie Turner, Neal Primm, Opal Funk, Gary Petree, Dorothy Johnson, and Neva Sleeth.  And a special thanks to Opal Funk who donated a framed picture of the Brashear Academy.

APRIL ELECTION

Tuesday, April 2, 2002 is Election Day.  Patrons of the Adair County R-II School District will be voting to elect three school board members.  Douglas I. Clarkson, Kenneth Crandall and Curtis Gordon have filed.   Patrons of our district will also be voting on a $900,000 general obligation bond issue.  See the enclosed brochure for detailed information.  Sample ballots for both items appear below.

TIGER PRIDE

Congratulations to the varsity basketball teams for their successful seasons.  The girls ended the season with a 21-5 record.  They finished 2nd place at the district tournament.  The boys 21-7 season ended in sectional play at Highland where they were defeated by Tina-Avalon 66-67.  With such great seasons it is no surprise that many of our student athletes have received recognition for their accomplishments throughout the 2001-2002 basketball season.  Nathan Kelsey was voted Tri-County Conference MVP.  First Team All-Conference Honors were received by Kristin Osborn and Drew Moyer.  Second Team All-Conference Honors were received by Jenny Elsea, Brooke Crandall and Trent Platz.  Coach Chad Zeigler was named Tri-County Coach of the Year.    Nathan Kelsey was named to the Northeast All-District Basketball First Team.  Second Team All-District Honors were received by Kristin Osborn and Drew Moyer.  In addition to the above honors, Nathan Kelsey was named one of KRES Radio’s All-Star Basketball Players and named to the Missouri 1A Boys All-State Basketball First Team.

Congratulations to Kate Slavin, Leslie Beck and Jennifer Thrasher for earning an Excellent (II) rating for their Flute Trio and Kate Slavin for her Flute Solo performance at the District Music Festival.  Congratulations also to the Concert Band, Flute Quartet, Saxophone Trio, Trumpet Quartet and Percussion Ensemble for earning Good (III) ratings.  At the District Music Festival the Glee Club received a Good (III) Rating and Kate Slavin earned a Superior (I) rating for her solo.  Kate will perform at the State Music Festival on April 26.  Good luck Kate!

The junior high and varsity Conference Academic Bowl Tournaments were held here at the school on Saturday, March 23.  Congratulations to the junior high academic bowl team for placing second.  Congratulations also to Kate Slavin.  She was second on the All-Conference Varsity team.  Members of the high school squad included Alicia Longano, Shaina Mountain, Kortney Shahan, Kate Slavin and Katie Thudium.  Rachel Turner served as the statistician.  Members of the junior high team were Danny Clarkson, Holly Hazen, Danielle Lowe, Kale Moore, Jeremiah Osborn, Nathan Osborn, Brent Platz and Brooke Salter.
