Classes Resume on January 4, 1999 |
Reflecting on the happenings of this past week, I am once again
reminded of the importance of relationships. I have witnessed
people pulling together and reaching out in loving support. I
am reminded of a quote by Dinah Shore, "Trouble is part of
life and if you don't share it, you don't give the people who
love you the chance to love you enough."
Nationwide surveys of satisfied persons indicate one common factor:
a mission, purpose, or chief aim in life. People can work for
a paycheck and be part of the "Thank goodness it's Friday"
group. Or, you can live your life for something larger, more grand,
and more important than the petty pace of those who are simply
"putting in time". The real joy in life, at any job,
is that of being used for a mighty purpose.
When I think about the importance of how we view what we are doing,
I am reminded of the following story. Two stonecutters were at
work and were asked what they were doing. In a complaining voice
one said, "I'm cutting stone". The other beamed and
said, "I'm building a cathedral". Same job, but one
is part of a grand purpose, the other is not. A vision without
tasks is a pipe dream. A task without vision is drudgery. A vision
with tasks can move the world. Imagine the vision behind the pyramids
of Egypt or America's moon landing project. Here's how George
Bernard Shaw said it:
This is the true joy in life
the being used for the purpose.
Recognized by yourself as a mighty one
being a force of nature.
Instead of a feverish little clod of ailments
and grievances complaining that the world
will not devote itself to making you happy.
I am of the opinion that my life belongs to
the whole community and as long as I live it is
my privilege to do whatever I can.
I want to be thoroughly used up when I die.
For the harder I work, the more I live.
I rejoice in life for its own sake.
Life is no brief candle to me.
It is a sort of splendid torch
which I've got a hold of for the moment
and want to make it burn as brightly
as I can before handing it on to future generations.
We have a staff dedicated to serving the youth of our community.
The staff at Adair County R-II School District has adopted the
following mission statement: We believe that in a democratic
society, education must help the student realize his or her worth
as an individual and should lead him or her toward becoming a
productive member of society. Strong emphasis must be placed upon
democratic values which are important for an effective and satisfying
personal and social life.
