Over one-hundred persons attended the first annual Ms. BHS Contest that was held on November 19, 1999 as part of the first drug-free activity night for this school year. Six male contestants spoofed the world of female beauty pageants as they vied for the title in cheerleading outfits, casual wear, and evening gown. Each contestant was a winner:
Best Interview--Jason Taylor
Best Cheerleader--Alan Zentz
Best Smile--Shaun Crandall
Best Hair and Legs--Jesse Turner
Ms. Congeniality--Ben Bradley
Ms. BHS--Joey Missen
National Honor Society and Student Council, sponsors
of the event, would like to extend a sincere thank you to district
patrons who provided refreshments or who supported their efforts
in some manner. The next drug-free activity night is scheduled
for March 31, 2000.
There will be a Financial Aid Workshop on Thursday, December 9, 1999 at 6:30 p.m. in the school library. I would especially encourage junior and senior parents to attend this meeting, however it is open to all parents. Melinda Woods or Kathy Elsea from the Financial Aid Office at Truman State University will present a program at 7:00 p.m. I will distribute financial aid packets that evening. At 6:30 the computer lab will be open and I would like to show parents resources that are available over the internet. If you are unable to attend but have internet access many resources are available at http://brashear.k12.mo.us/dept/guidance/.

FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT
Our character word this month certainly fits in with the season.
Our teachers have selected the word generosity. Demonstrating
generosity involves an investment in other people or causes.
The key is to make such an investment without any expectation
of return benefits. A person must give without hidden motives
or purposes. Generosity must be totally sincere.
Freely giving and sharing with others requires a dramatic change
in thinking from the popular mentality of "me first!"
It is a natural tendency to be concerned primarily for our own
needs. A generous person, however, is concerned with the needs
of others. Sometime, generosity requires sacrificing personal
desires, preferences, or needs for the benefit and well being
of others.
Educators and parents make enormous investments in the lives of
children. Their birth, childhood, education, physical needs,
emotional needs, love, attention, and discipline all require investments
by everyone around them. A child who sees the generous giving
of his or her parents and teachers will long remember and follow
their examples.
What better time than at Christmas to demonstrate generosity to
children by willingly giving up your time. Many times a teacher
spends extra hours in preparation for class the next day. Generosity
applies to much more than money. Time is a valuable resource
that can be invested in others.
I would like to thank PTS, The Booster Club, and our many volunteers
for their generosity to our school. Without these people sharing
their time and talents, many productive things in our school district
would be left unaccomplished.
Dr. Joyce Montgomery
