ADAIR COUNTY R-II NEWSLETTER
February 1,
2005 Brashear, Missouri
Local school board
members are dedicated citizens who carry out the truest form of representative
government—volunteer public service.
School board service is perhaps the purest expression of grassroots
democratic principles upon which our nation was founded.
In these challenging
times, school board members are called upon to be the policy makers for our
school district and are often called upon to make tough decisions. The week of January 23 through January 29,
2005, has been declared School Board Recognition Week by the Missouri School
Boards’ Association. It’s a time for
educators and citizens across the state to salute these unpaid volunteers who
serve public education on behalf of their communities. It seems fitting that at least once a year
we thank them for their time and dedication.
Being an effective school
board member is no easy task. Lay
school leaders need to be knowledgeable about many complex educational and
social issues. Board members govern
individual school districts, establish local policies, approve educational
programs, provide necessary physical facilities, hire the superintendent, and
share in costs by raising necessary local funds along with state funds to
operate district educational programs.
School board members’
service ensures that decisions about our public schools are made as close to
the needs of our children and communities as possible. Further, our local board members serve as
examples for our young people of the excellent tradition of volunteering that
is a hallmark of our society.
School board members face challenges every day. For their untiring personal dedication and commitment to public service, let’s give our school board members a hand.

MISSOURI EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS WEEK
January 30—February 5, 2005
Earthquake! - Drop, Cover and Hold! Then
Look UP!
When you feel an earthquake, DROP under a desk or a sturdy table.
Stay away from windows, bookcases, file cabinets, heavy mirrors, hanging
plants, and other objects that could fall. Watch out for falling plaster or
ceiling tiles. Stay under COVER until
the shaking stops. HOLD onto
the desk or table. If it moves, move
with it. If you exit a building LOOK UP before you leave
the building to make sure you will not be hit by falling debris, bricks or
building ornaments. Running outside
a building is a good way to become an earthquake casualty.
Here are some additional tips for specific locations:
¨ If you are in a HIGH RISE BUILDING and not near a
desk or table, move against an interior wall, and protect your head with your
arms. Face away from windows. Do not use the elevators. Do not be surprised if alarms or sprinkler
systems activate.
¨ If you are OUTDOORS, move to a
clear area, away from trees, signs, buildings or downed electrical wires and
poles.
¨ If you are on a SIDE WALK NEAR BUILDINGS, get into a
building’s doorway to protect yourself from falling bricks, glass, plaster, and
other debris.
¨ If you are DRIVING, slowly pull over to the side of
the road and stop. Avoid overpasses, power lines, and other hazards. Stay
inside the vehicle until the shaking is over.
¨ If you are in a CROWDED STORE OR OTHER PUBLIC PLACE,
do not rush for exits. Move away from
display shelves with objects that could fall on you.
¨ If you are in a WHEEL CHAIR, stay in it.
Move to cover, if possible, lock your wheels, and protect your head with your
arms.
¨ If you are in
the KITCHEN, move away from
the refrigerator, stove and overhead cupboards. (Take time now to anchor appliances and install security latches
on cupboard doors to reduce hazards.)
¨ If you are in a STADIUM OR A THEATRE, stay in your
seat or get under it if possible, and protect your head with your arms. Do not
try to leave until the shaking is over. Then leave in a calm, orderly manner.
After an earthquake, be prepared for AFTERSHOCKS, and plan where
you will take cover when these occur.

I recently received a complimentary report from a basketball official
regarding the boys basketball game between Brashear and Marion County that took
place during the North Shelby Tournament.
Since it is a short report, I have decided to reprint it in its
entirety:
“During the North Shelby Tournament, I had the pleasure of officiating
an outstanding 7th place boys basketball game between Marion County &
Brashear. The overtime game was well
played, well coached and hard fought by both teams. It was a pleasure to hear nothing but words of encouragement from
the players on the court and from the benches and the stands. I don’t recall a game of such noteworthy
conduct by all those involved. Both
schools should be proud of the effort and commended for the actions of all
those present representing their school.”
I also applaud our patrons efforts to maintain a positive attitude and
to set such a fine example of sportsmanship for our young people to
follow. Thank you for your continued
support.

Welcome to Jenny Pringle in the counseling office. Jenny is a Truman student working on her
Master's of Counseling. Jenny will be
doing a portion of her internship here this semester and will be here most
Thursdays and Fridays working from the counseling office under my
supervision. Many of the students know
her as Miss Jenny from the after school program.
There is a lot going on in the counseling office the month of
February. The 7th - 11th is National
School Counseling Week. We will spend
the week talking to the students about what counselors do and how they can be
helpful to a variety of different people.
This week also gives me the opportunity to thank all of the faculty,
staff, and community for their support of the counseling program.
February is also the month where students are given the opportunity to
job shadow. This year grades 5 and 10
will be shadowing. Watch for more
information to come out on this.

Interest in the Tiger
Pride Before- and After-School Program has exceeded our greatest
expectations. The program is currently
serving around sixty students.
This program, funded by a
federal grant, provides an extended school day for the participants. The goals of the program include providing a
quality program in a safe environment that will lead to improved academic
achievement and performance. In
addition, it is the intent of the program to decrease at-risk behaviors, help
students further develop social skills, and provide literacy and other skill
development opportunities for families.
Students enjoy a variety
of activities as evidenced by these “quotes from the kids”.
“I liked it when we made
MISSOURI with play dough.” 1st Grader.
“Tiger Pride is a great
program. …In Tiger Pride, we first have
a snack. Then, we either do an activity
or recess. Also, on Wednesdays, you can
go to a French class. We also have fun
field trips. Sometimes we read about something,
and we learn a lot. I think everyone
should join and have fun at Tiger Pride!”
5th Grader.
“It was fun to study
beavers and make beaver lodges.” 4th
Grader.
“Tiger Pride is a good
enrichment program. We have done many
games such as Bring Home the Bacon, Witch’s
Broom, The 10 Presidents, and many more. My favorite was The 10
Presidents.” 6th Grader.
“I liked to make
scarecrows.” 1st Grader.
“In Tiger Pride, you will
never get bored. There is plenty to
do. Let’s see, field trips to farms,
Wal-Mart, and you get to go fishing.
Many visitors come—even astronomers!
You will have the time of you life.”
5th Grader.
