EDISON SUMMER SCHOOL
This summer, free of charge, your child can
experience The Summer Adventure, an
exciting program at our school beginning May 28, 2002 and running through June
28, 2002. A whole new approach to
summer school, the program is intended for all
students who will be in kindergarten through eighth grade in the fall of
2002. Transportation will be
available and a school lunch will be served.
The Summer Adventure has extra-ordinary educational goals: to ensure that
participating students, not only realize,
but also, maximize their potential
for learning, through challenging and
fun courses. The core academic
instruction includes hands-on instruction in reading, language arts,
science, and math, which should serve to dramatically multiply student
awareness of these subjects. Other
important fields of study will be explored as well. To understand the basic principles of flight for instance, students
will construct and fly real rockets.
Through the proposed TV/Media class, students will apply their
knowledge of language to produce authentic television and multimedia
presentations.
While all of the ambitious
core academic courses will be relaxed in format and focused on fun, the Summer Adventure program will also offer
elective classes for pure enjoyment and discovery. Courses like Outdoor Bound
and Lifetime Sports will be offered to develop the body. Arts and Crafts and Project Art
classes will address and encourage our students’ artistic abilities.
To make the program even
more enticing to students, an extensive incentives program will be
offered. Attendance, attitude, and
achievement will be rewarded each day as
students earn points that can be used to “purchase” valuable prizes. From
go-karts to radios to stereo equipment, Summer
Adventure students will be richly rewarded for their extra effort.
Who should attend The Summer Adventure? Everyone. Representatives from the Edison Corporation will meet with
students on Thursday, March 14 at 2:30 p.m.
Grades 4-7 will meet in the cafeteria.
Grades Pre-K –3 will meet in the elementary gym. Parents are welcome to attend.
The Adair County R-II School
is on of 181 school districts selected by the Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education from Missouri’s 524 public school districts to receive its
new "Distinction in Performance" award, which will be given annually
to all districts that demonstrate consistent gains in academic performance. The
list in its entirety can be seen at
http://www.dese.state.mo.us/news/2002/distinction.htm.
The State Board of
Education and top officials of the Department will formally recognize the
school districts in a series of regional banquets across the state during March
and April.
The new award is based
on the districts’ Annual Performance Reports, which are tabulated each year by
the Department. The Annual Performance
Report is based on the same criteria used in the accreditation standards for
school districts. These include MAP
test scores, ACT test scores, attendance and dropout rates, and other academic
performance measures.
To qualify for
Distinction in Performance, K-12 school districts had to meet 11 of 12
performance indicators during the last school year. K-8 school districts were recognized if they met 5 out of 6
possible performance indicators.
Although the new award
is based on the state’s accreditation standards, it does not affect a
district’s overall accreditation status.
Districts are reviewed and accredited once every five years; the new
Distinction in Performance designation will be awarded annually.
"The Distinction
in Performance award is designed to recognize students and teachers each year
for their efforts in improving overall academic achievement. We hope this honor
will serve as a way for school districts and communities to celebrate their
role in meeting Missouri’s high educational standards," said Commissioner
of Education D. Kent King.
The Adair County R-II
School will be honored at Truman State University on Monday, March 25, 2002.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The parents of students attending the Adair County
R-II Schools are of major importance to the Board of Education and
Administration of the District. Our
chief goal is to provide the best education we can for your children with the
resources and funds available in order to better prepare them for future
education and work success. Your input
helps establish the priorities and your support is essential to the successful
passage of the proposed general obligation bond issue.
The next building project steering committee will
meet at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2002 in the school library. The public is welcome to attend and volunteers
to serve on the steering committee are needed.
Information about the building project and general
obligation bond issue will be available at the PTS meeting on March 7. We are also planning two Public Forum
meetings to provide more information. The
first Public Forum meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 in the
high school gymnasium. Tours of the
current elementary building will be available and refreshments will be
served. The second Public Forum will
be held Thursday, March 27, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. in the high school
gymnasium. A free complimentary soup
supper will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria in conjunction with the
informational meeting. The public is
encouraged to attend.
If you are not able to attend either of the Public
Forums and would like information, representatives from the school are
scheduled to speak on KIRX Area Scene on Monday, March 25, 2002 at 9:35 a.m.
A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE!!
We’re going back in time! You
are invited to join us on Thursday, March 7, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. (during the
regular PTS meeting). A group of
Brashear friends will share memories of their experiences here in years past
during an informal panel discussion.
Our distinguished guests will tell
stories and answer questions from students who are participating in this oral
history project to research the history of Brashear School. Please come for an
evening of sentimental fun, entertainment and a few laughs together…a good walk
down Memory Lane. Join us!
DISNEY’S AMERICAN
TEACHER AWARDS
The Walt Disney Company is searching for amazing,
dynamic, creative teachers who lead their students to the heights of
learning. When we find these
outstanding teachers, we’re going to honor them with monetary awards totaling
over half a million dollars and recognition at a nationally televised awards
gala.
Please give us a hand in making sure we locate each
and every deserving teacher. Students,
parents, other teachers—anyone who knows a great teacher—please contact us
between February 1 and March 31, 2002.
Giving them a hand like this is the most powerful way you can thank a
teacher. Call toll-free 1-877-ATA-TEACH
(1-877-282-8322) or log on to www.disneylearning.org.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
The Adair County R-II School will conduct its annual kindergarten registration on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 2 and 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Brashear Elementary School building.
All district children who will be five years old before August 1, 2002 are eligible to register for kindergarten.
Parents of kindergarten age children must bring the following: (1) the child’s official state-issued birth certificate—the hospital or county issued birth certificate is not acceptable; (2) the child’s up-to-date immunization records; and (3) the child’s social security card. The above mentioned records must be on file before the child may attend kindergarten in the fall.
We will begin scheduling appointments immediately. Please call the school at 323-5272 and ask for the elementary office. Karla Hettinger or Shelly Shipman can set up an appointment.
PRESCHOOL SCREENING
The Adair County R-II School will conduct its annual preschool screening on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 2 and 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Elementary School building. We recommend that all district children ages birth to kindergarten age be developmentally screened. This screening includes hearing and vision (if old enough), height, weight, and a general health assessment.
Please call the school at 323-5272 and ask for the elementary office. Karla Hettinger or Shelly Shipman can set up an appointment.
