LIBRARY DONATIONS

A special donation by Dana Miller honors the memory of Mable Mary Burnham Ellis who graduated from Brashear High School in May of 1928.  Dana has offered us Mrs. Ellis’s scrapbook from 1927-28 entitled The Girl Graduates Journal.  The scrapbook is an excellent example of a primary source that can be used for research into the history of our school as well as a peek into the life of a young lady in the 1920’s.  Following is an excerpt from her journal:

“In the year 1925 thirty-five green freshmen booked passage on the B.H.S. liner and         started their High School cruise on the first Monday in September…. On December 9,             1925 a calamity occurred which looked as if it might cease our voyage.  The dear old

B.H.S. burned.  However we continued our voyage in the Opera House.  We docked from May until September 1926.  But in September we continued our sailing in a new and        modern B.H.S. as Sophomores, with a large gymnasium and auditorium with new scen-   ery, steam heat, hot and cold showers, electric clocks and equipment for all kinds of in- door sports.”

To glimpse into the life and time at BHS in the mid 1920’s, visit the special book collection in our library.

Again this month we have books that have been donated to the library in the memory of loved ones who have passed on.  Build Your Own Contemporary Furniture and Easy Wood Furniture Projects were donated in memory of Richard Coy by Dennis and Diane Bradley.  They Made America was donated by Pat and Eleanor Ellebracht.

Books make a lasting tribute to the memory of our loved ones.  If there is someone that you would like to memorialize in this way, please contact Denise Brown, Library Media Specialist at 323-5272.

NAUVOO VISITS TIGER PRIDE AFTER SCHOOL

Nauvoo on the Road, an educational program from the Nauvoo Christian Visitor’s Center, visited the Tiger Pride After School program on Thursday, February 17.

This presentation provided an opportunity for our students to glimpse life in early pioneer days.  Candle making, brick making, rope making, as well as making gingerbread cookies and playing pioneer games were among the featured demonstrations.

The students enjoyed the program and as you might expect they loved eating the gingerbread cookies and playing the games.  Others were fascinated by the various demonstrations but a particular favorite was the rope making.

We would like to follow up on this visit to help our students understand more about our heritage and life in the past.  If you have stories that you have heard from your parents or grandparents or have a special skill or talent that you could share with our students, we would love to invite you to our after school program.
