ADAIR COUNTY R-II NEWSLETTER
MARCH 1, 2012 Brashear,
Missouri
MUSIC NEWS
February is
traditionally a quiet month in the music program, but we have been hard at work
behind the scenes. The MSHSAA State
Large Group Festival will be held on Friday, March 23 at Hannibal-LaGrange
College. Our Concert Band (grades 7-12)
will present "Rough-Riders",
a march by Karl King, and "Laramie: A Western Overture" by
David Shaffer. The band has been working
on perfecting their parts since before Christmas, and several guest clinicians
have been out to Brashear to give their musical insights. We are grateful to these guests, which have
included faculty from the Truman Music Department, for offering their services
to our school free of charge.
High school band
members have also been busy preparing solos and small ensembles for their
festival on Saturday, March 31, at Kirksville High School. Junior high band has been focusing on
sight-reading skills, and learning their parts for the contest pieces. 6th grade band has been working on tuning
their instruments on their own, using their ears, as well as the chromatic
scale. 5th grade band has been working
on expressive playing, as well as reading music.
The general
music classes have been learning a lot as well. Kindergarten and 1st grade classes have been learning musical
listening skills, and performing and recognizing fast, slow, loud, and soft. 2nd and 3rd grade classes have been learning
new songs and decoding simple rhythmic patterns. 4th grade has begun their "Recorder Karate" program, in
which students can earn 9 different "belts" by playing progressively
more difficult pieces on their recorders.
It is still early, but we already have 1 orange belt, 5 yellow belts,
and 10 white belts in our class of 20 students. 5th and 6th grade classes have been training their ears to hear,
read and write rhythms and tonal structures.
The 8th grade general music class has been working with "trash
can" drums to learn rhythm reading, writing, as well as listening and
improvisation.

BRING CHANGE FOR A CHANGE!
The Elementary
service project for Pennies for Patients was a HUGE success. They raised over $700 for kids with
cancer! The winning class was fourth
grade with $159.42 followed by Kindergarten in a close second with
$158.27! First grade was close behind,
also raising over $100 with $119.26.
All three of these classes will be receiving a bronze pennant for
raising over $100. The fourth grade
class will be receiving a pizza party as well.
What an amazing show of kindness and caring for those in need!

GROUNDHOG JOB SHADOWING DAY
A huge thank you
to all of the parents and local business people who helped make Adair County
R-II Schools Job Shadow Day a success.
Fifty-one students from grades 5, 7 and 10 were out on the job last
week.
Job Shadow Day
is sponsored by America’s Promise, National School-to-Work Opportunities
Office, Junior Achievement and American Society of Association Executives and
is a day dedicated to giving young people across America Job Shadowing
experiences. Job Shadowing enables kids
to shadow a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job,
providing an up-close look at how the skills learned in school are put into
action in the workplace.
Students
returned from their Job Shadowing experience enthusiastic and with a better
understanding of how the skills learned in the school environment are used in
the “real world” work place. We
appreciate the effort put forth by the parents, mentors and businesses involved
in making this a successful learning experience for these students.
Following is a
list of businesses and/or people who donated their time to this project.
