The Brashear High School would like to take this opportunity to thank the merchants and businesses which support the Renaissance Program. With the conclusion of the fall extracurricular activities, we would like to congratulate the following students for their awards and honors.

Amber Dailing, Trevor Mills, Dru Talbert, and Nathan Kelsey were named to the All-Conference 2^nd team. Ashlee Erwin, Amanda Fisher and Joey Missen were named to the All-Conference 1^st team.

Ten band and choir members qualified for the Annual Tri-Conference Music performance to be held Nov. 1 at 1:00 in our high school gym. Those students are Kate Slavin, Kelly Moore, Kristin Osborn, Katie Thudium, Brooke Crandall, Jenny Elsea, Charlotte Longano, Sara Heath, Shelly Howard, and Shaun Heath.

Jason Taylor received a statewide Youth Leadership Award for his outstanding community leadership. This award was sponsored by Missouri Community Betterment. Community Betterment is a statewide recognition program administered by the Missouri Department of Economic Development.

Congratulations to all of these students on their accomplishments.

Our first Drug-Free Activity Night of the year is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 P.M. Our featured entertainment for the evening is being crowned Brashear High School Womanless Woman of the Year. Other activities will include volleyball, bowling, ping pong, board games and refreshments. We invite all parents and community members as well as students in grades 7-12 to participate. Donations for refreshments are welcome.

School was dismissed Oct. 7 and 8 at the Adair County R-II School District for teachers to attend teacher's meetings in Quincy and Kirksville.

Quincy Conference was held Oct. 7 in Quincy, IL and featured several nationally-known speakers.

District Teacher's Meeting, sponsored by MSTA, was held in Kirksville on Oct. 8 with featured speaker Dave Leedy and department meetings were also held.

Rhonda Harrison served as the school's representative to the Northeast District Assembly of Delegates, held Oct. 7.

Most of our teachers attended at least one day.

Individual parents whose children qualify for the enrichment program will be receiving notification soon.

Referrals may be made by teachers and/or parents. Students may be referred at any time during the school year.

Students must meet at least two of the three following criteria to be identified as gifted:

a. Achievement Test Scores: Students scoring at the 95^th percentile or above in any area on an achievement test.

b. Group IQ Scores: Students scoring at or above 125 on the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (or comparable Group IQ Test).

c. Gifted Evaluation Scale: Students scoring at or above 125.

The Elementary will be celebrating Reading Week during the week of November 15^th - 19^th . We will kick the week off by reading Monday night from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Camp Read A Lot (elementary gym). Campers will be reading in tents, sleeping bags, etc. Be sure to bring your flashlight and join in on the fun.

On November 19^th Young Audiences of St. Louis will be presenting "Casey at Bat" - Scott Hanson will be presenting a comic and heartfelt production. Mr. Hanson combines poetry, song, mime, juggling, and even a touch of magic as he examines

GRATEFULNESS

This month we are studying the word gratefulness as a part of our character education. Appreciation, gratitude, and thanks are words often used interchangeably, but they each have very precise meanings that complement and balance one another.

Appreciation is setting a value on something. It is esteeming a person, object, experience, or idea. Gratitude is the feeling one has after a kind word, deed, or gift that has been received, especially when it was unexpected or undeserved. Thanks is the outward expression made by a grateful person toward those who have inspired gratitude. It is acknowledging that a favor has been received.

The first day of fall has just passed and winter is right around the corner. Soon we will be listening to the radio for bus information. Are we having school? Will the buses be running late? Are the buses running on hard surface roads only?

Have you ever thought about the inconvenience of not having a school bus pick up your children? Riding a school bus is often an over looked privilege. It is important to us to provide safe transportation to our students. In order to do this it is necessary for the bus drivers, students, parents and the school district personnel to work in harmony.

The administrative staff discussed ways to ensure the safety of our students with our bus drivers. As a result, we are cracking down on behavior problems that are occurring on the bus. We have developed a bus policy that we will be strictly enforcing.

Profanity will not be permitted on the bus. If your child uses profanity on the bus it will be an automatic bus suspension. Another area we are working on is seeing to it that no students are walking around when the bus is in motion. We care deeply about our students and we want their bus ride to be safe and pleasant.

We have really appreciated the support we have received from our families. Please remember my office door is open come by anytime to see me. We welcome your suggestions.
