ADAIR COUNTY R-II NEWSLETTER

October 1, 2004 Brashear, Missouri

NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK

The elementary school will be celebrating National School Lunch week October 11-15 by inviting parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles to join them for lunch. Each class has a specific day to invite someone to lunch. Because of space, we ask that only one adult join us per student. Please let us know of your participation at least one day prior and include money. We no longer accept money in the cafeteria. An adult lunch costs $2.00. The salad bar is available everyday. A side salad is included with the regular menu. The schedule is as follows:

Monday Kindergarten/4th Grade

Tuesday 1st Grade

Wednesday 2nd Grade

Thursday 3rd/6th Grades

Friday 5th Grade

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

School will be dismissed at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 3rd for parent teacher conferences. Conferences will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will end at 7:30 p.m. If you have not already done so, please contact the appropriate office to schedule an appointment for your child(ren). You will be able to pick up first quarter grade cards at the time of your conference.

The students in grades K-6 are once again participating in the BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION PROGRAM which pays 10 cents for each Box Top coupon from various grocery items. Thanks to all parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbors who have contributed to this cause. Keep up the good work!

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT SURROGATE PARENT PROGRAM

Pursuant to the requirements of state law 162.997-999-RSMo, the State Board of Education is required to appoint a surrogate parent as such time as it becomes evident that a child with a disability does not have a parent or a person acting as a parent to participate in matters dealing with the provision of special education. For purposes of surrogate parent appointment, "parent" is defined as a biological parent, a guardian, or a person acting as a parent of a child including, but not limited to, a grandparent, a step parent, or a foster parent with whom the child lives. The term does not include the State if the child is a ward of the State. The term does not include a person whose parental rights have been terminated.

The local school district is given the responsibility to determine when a child with a disability who requires special education and who resides in the District is without a parent. The District must notify the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of the need to appoint a surrogate parent. Training for persons serving as surrogate parents will be provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the District.

If you are interested in volunteering to serve as a surrogate parent, more information can be obtained from the Districts’ surrogate parent contact person - the person responsible for the District’s special education program.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

As the winter season approaches, we are reminding parents and students to listen to the local media stations to check on "early dismissals" and/or "no school" bulletins. This information will be given to KTVO television, KHQA television, WGEM television, KIRX radio, KTUF radio, KRXL radio, KRES radio of Moberly, KMEM radio of Memphis, and KZBK radio of Brookfield. These stations will present dismissal information as soon as decisions have been made. Please do not call the school.

THANK YOU...

Doug Clarkson, Joe Clarkson, Ivan Cole, Brent Hettinger, Robert Mills, and Lonnie Salter for helping prepare the Elementary Playground for the school year.

Tom & Colleen Primmer, the Career Center at Truman State University, Steve Harvey, and the Elementary Student Council for their donations of books to the library.

Thank you Sara Sweet for all your efforts for a successful Book Fair this fall.

Truman State University Science Division for their donation of a ventilation system for our science department.

FBLA NEWS

FBLA will be selling Krispy Kreme Doughnuts as a fundraiser during the months of October and November.  Students will sell Krispy Kreme Doughnuts during the first two weeks of each month and delivery will be near the middle of the month.  The cost of the doughnuts will be $6 per dozen. Money raised from the sale of doughnuts will help to fund the field trip to Chicago, district contest, state leadership conference, community service projects, school service projects and club activities.  If anyone is interested in purchasing the doughnuts, please call Mrs. Reese at school or contact an FBLA member.

FBLA is planning to add landscaping to our school courtyard.  If anyone would like to donate extra bulbs or plants while thinning beds this fall, FBLA would really appreciate the contribution.  Plants or bulbs can be sent with your child or left at school in the offices or the business room.

CONCERT DATES

The Winter Concert has been set for Monday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m. and the Spring Concert has been set for Tuesday, April 5th at 7:00 p.m.

LIBRARY TO OFFER EXTENDED HOURS

As part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school grant, the library media center will offer extended hours this year.  It will be open so families can take time to check out books to enjoy together.  Our first library time will be on October 18 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.  This coincides with the elementary school's first Evening in Education activity.

Your child does not have to be a part of the Tiger Pride program for your family to participate.  Other family library nights will be scheduled throughout the year.  Watch the newsletter for dates!

BRASHEAR TIGER JACKETS

Attention Brashear Tiger Fans! The elementary teachers are selling Brashear Tiger jackets. They are black nylon with a lining and hood. You may choose between two styles—elastic waist or draw string waist. A tiger head will be embroidered on one side with "Brashear" embroidered above it and "Tigers" embroidered below it. You may get your name embroidered on the opposite side for an additional $3.00. The cost of the jackets will be $38.00 for youth sizes and $40.00 for adult sizes with an additional $2.00 for XXL. Sizes go up to 6XL. Orders are due Thursday, October 7th. Money must be turned in with the order form. Proceeds from the jackets will be split equally among the elementary teachers to be used in their classrooms. Order forms are available in the elementary and high school offices.

Disney is searching for amazing, dynamic, creative teachers who lead their students to the heights of learning. Anyone who knows a great teacher should contact them before October 15, 2004.
