NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK

The elementary school will be celebrating National School Lunch week October 13-17 by inviting parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles to join them for lunch.  Each class has a specific day to invite someone to lunch.  Because of space, we ask that only one adult join us per student.  Please let us know of your participation at least one day prior and include money.  We no longer accept money in the cafeteria.  An adult lunch costs $2.00.  The salad bar is available everyday.  A side salad is included with the regular menu.  The schedule is as follows:

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

School will be dismissed at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 30th for parent teacher conferences.  Conferences will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will end at 8:00 p.m.  If you have not already done so, please contact the appropriate office to schedule an appointment for your child(ren).  You will be able to pick up first quarter grade cards at the time of your conference.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT SURROGATE PARENT PROGRAM

Pursuant to the requirements of state law 162.997-999-RSMo, the State Board of Education is required to appoint a surrogate parent as such time as it becomes evident that a child with a disability does not have a parent or a person acting as a parent to participate in matters dealing with the provision of special education.  For purposes of surrogate parent appointment, "parent" is defined as a biological parent, a guardian, or a person acting as a parent of a child including, but not limited to, a grandparent, a step parent, or a foster parent with whom the child lives.  The term does not include the State if the child is a ward of the State.  The term does not include a person whose parental rights have been terminated.

The local school district is given the responsibility to determine when a child with a disability who requires special education and who resides in the District is without a parent.  The District must notify the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of the need to appoint a surrogate parent.  Training for persons serving as surrogate parents will be provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the District.

If you are interested in volunteering to serve as a surrogate parent, more information can be obtained from the Districts' surrogate parent contact person - the person responsible for the District's special education program.

COUNSELING NEWS

Mark your Calendar:

11th grade - PSAT - October 21 - Optional practice SAT test.  Cost is $10.50.  Register with Mrs. Grissom to take this test.

10th grade - PLAN - October 29 - Required test for sophomores.  Will provide us with valuable career planning information and an estimated ACT score.

October 27-31 - Red Ribbon Week - We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week during October this year.  Elementary will be doing a variety of activities including a door decorating contest, obstacle courses, movies, guest speakers and dress up days.  High School will participate in morning competitions, movies, guest speakers, and the Grim Reaper activity that will demonstrate how many people are killed each day by drunk drivers.

There is a new face in the counseling office this year.  Madeline Herrmann is here doing her counseling internship with Mrs. Grissom.  She is in the counseling program at Truman and will be graduating in May.  Ms. Herrmann will be helping Mrs. Grissom with Red Ribbon Week, classroom guidance, and a variety of other counseling activities.  Please welcome her.

Like last year, Mrs. Grissom and Ms. Herrmann would like to have lunch with all of the elementary students.  We'll be splitting up the classes and taking small groups at a time either outside or to the PAT room to eat lunch.  This gives the students a change of scenery and allows them to get to know the counselors as well as giving us a chance to get to know them better.  We may also be doing some Breakfast Clubs for those who eat breakfast.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Mrs. Grissom
