PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

SURROGATE PARENT PROGRAM

Pursuant to the requirements of state law 162.997-999-RSMo, the State Board of Education is required to appoint a surrogate parent as such time as it becomes evident that a child with a disability does not have a parent or a person acting as a parent to participate in matters dealing with the provision of special education. For purposes of surrogate parent appointment, "parent" is defined as a biological parent, a guardian, or a person acting as a parent of a child including, but not limited to, a grandparent, a step parent, or a foster parent with whom the child lives. The term does not include the State if the child is a ward of the State. The term does not include a person whose parental rights have been terminated.

The local school district is given the responsibility to determine when a child with a disability who requires special education and who resides in the District is without a parent. The District must notify the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of the need to appoint a surrogate parent. Training for persons serving as surrogate parents will be provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the District.

If you are interested in volunteering to serve as a surrogate parent, more information can be obtained from the Districts’ surrogate parent contact person - the person responsible for the District’s special education program.

LIBRARY TO OFFER EXTENDED HOURS

As part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school grant, the library media center will offer extended hours this year.  It will be open so families can take time to check out books to enjoy together.  Our first library time will be on October 20 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.  This coincides with the Tiger Pride’s "Light’s On Afterschool" event.

Your child does not have to be a part of the Tiger Pride program for your family to participate.  Other family library nights will be scheduled throughout the year.  Watch the newsletter for dates!

COY MEMORIAL

Chuck Baker, in memory of Richard Coy, has handcrafted a beautiful walnut trophy case. The trophy case, built with funds donated by the Richard Coy family, stands proudly at the entrance of the Brashear High School and will house the trophies earned at State Level Competition.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Several things are going on this month in the Guidance office. On October 12, the juniors have the option of taking the PSAT. The PSAT is a practice SAT/ACT test. It gives them the opportunity to experience a 3 hour test before going and taking the real thing.

On October 19, the sophomores will be taking the PLAN test. This test also prepares students for the ACT and even gives them an estimated score on what they might receive on the ACT. It lets us know if students are on track for college, points out academic strengths and areas of improvement, helps find career matches, and connects students with colleges.

The big thing coming up in October from the Counseling Office is Red Ribbon Week, October 24-28. The entire month of October in guidance we'll be talking about drugs and alcohol and how to avoid them. The theme this year is "I Have the POWER to Be Drug Free!" On Monday, Rainey Fann, a ventriloquist, will be here to speak to the elementary about the power to be drug free. On Wednesday, the Jackson Weightlifting Club will be here to present to the high school on the POWER to be drug free. On Friday, the high school will also be having a guest speaker coming from Preferred Family Healthcare to talk with us about Meth.

Each day will be a dress up day revolving around a drug-free saying.

Monday -"Give drugs the slip." Wear your jammies and slippers.

Tuesday - "The POWER to be Drug Free" - Wear your athletic wear.

Wednesday - "Elect to be drug free." Wear red, white, and blue.

Thursday - "Make a career of being drug free." Dress up like your future career.

Friday - "Color our world drug free." Be yourself and wear your favorite color.

Dress up to show your "POWER to be drug-free" spirit!!

PENNY DRIVE

The High School Resource classes have decided to conduct a penny drive to raise funds for the American Red Cross Relief Effort to benefit the hurricane victims. They have decided to make it a competition between the classes to see which class can raise the most money. There will be a separate contest for the elementary (K-6) and high school (7-12) students. Participation in the penny drive is completely optional. The penny drive will run until October 31, 2005. Again, all proceeds will go to the Adair County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
