PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

SURROGATE PARENT PROGRAM

Pursuant to the requirements of state law 162.997-999-RSMo, the State Board of Education is required to appoint a surrogate parent as such time as it becomes evident that a child with a disability does not have a parent or a person acting as a parent to participate in matters dealing with the provision of special education.  For purposes of surrogate parent appointment, “parent” is defined as a biological parent, a guardian, or a person acting as a parent of a child including, but not limited to, a grandparent, a step parent, or a foster parent with whom the child lives.  The term does not include the State if the child is a ward of the State.  The term does not include a person whose parental rights have been terminated.

The local school district is given the responsibility to determine when a child with a disability who requires special education and who resides in the District is without a parent.  The District must notify the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of the need to appoint a surrogate parent.  Training for persons serving as surrogate parents will be provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the District.

If you are interested in volunteering to serve as a surrogate parent, more information can be obtained from the Districts’ surrogate parent contact person - the person responsible for the District’s special education program.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

As the winter season approaches, we are reminding parents and students to listen to the local media stations to check on “early dismissals” and/or “no school” bulletins.  This information will be given to KTVO television, KHQA television, WGEM television, KIRX radio, KTUF radio, KRXL radio, KLTE radio, KRES radio of Moberly, KMEM radio of Memphis, and KZBK radio of Brookfield.  These stations will present dismissal information as soon as decisions have been made.  Please do not call the school.

EXTENDED LIBRARY HOURS

As part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school grant, the library media center will offer extended hours this year.  It will be open so families can take time to check out books to enjoy together.  Our first library time will be on October 22 from 6:30 to 7:00 pm.  This coincides with the Tiger Pride’s “Lights On Afterschool” event.

Your child does not have to be a part of the Tiger Pride program for your family to participate.  The library is also available to adults to check out materials.

21ST CCLC NEWS

Tiger Pride is off to a great start this year!  Thank you for being patient as we have more forms to manage in our pursuit of licensure!  We’re very proud that our program has met Missouri’s high standards for licensed child-care facilities!

Please mark your calendars for Monday, October 22nd!  From 5:30-7:00 p.m. Tiger Pride is teaming up with Red Ribbon activities to celebrate the belief that “We Have Better Things to Do Than Drugs!”  After School programs around the United States provide safe child-care and lessen the likelihood that children will get involved in unhealthy/dangerous activities while their parents are working.  We will be having a soup supper, special performances, fun games and crafts, a photo booth where your family can pose for free portraits and information available about helping children make healthy life choices!  Admission is one roll of duct tape (used by Tiger Pride kids for fun “sticky situations”) per family.  All colors and patterns of duct tape are welcome!  We hope you can join us!

All parents who have been involved in our Parent Advisory Council should be expecting an invitation in October for an upcoming meeting.  If you are interested in being involved in the Tiger Pride Parent Advisory Council, please contact Mrs. Kerby or Mrs. Bradley.  Your input is valuable!
