dismissed at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 21st for parent teacher conferences. Conferences are scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. If you have not already done so, please
contact the appropriate office to schedule an appointment for your
child(ren). You will be able to pick up
first quarter grade cards at the time of your conference.
Please note that
we will not have school on Friday, October 22, 2010.
Box Tops For Education
The Brashear Elementary Student Council will be collecting Box
Tops again this year. Last October, we
sent in a collection of Box Tops worth $934.
In February, we sent in another collection worth $452. This year we would like to set our goal at
$1,400. With your help, we will be able
to reach that goal. Every Box Top you
collect is worth $.10. Thank you for
taking the time to clip Box Tops, the money we receive really does help the
school.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
SURROGATE PARENT PROGRAM
Pursuant to the
requirements of state law 162.997-999-RSMo, the State Board of Education is
required to appoint a surrogate parent as such time as it becomes evident that
a child with a disability does not have a parent or a person acting as a parent
to participate in matters dealing with the provision of special education. For purposes of surrogate parent appointment,
“parent” is defined as a biological parent, a guardian, or a person acting as a
parent of a child including, but not limited to, a grandparent, a step parent,
or a foster parent with whom the child lives.
The term does not include the State if the child is a ward of the
State. The term does not include a
person whose parental rights have been terminated.
The local school
district is given the responsibility to determine when a child with a
disability who requires special education and who resides in the District is
without a parent. The District must
notify the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of the
need to appoint a surrogate parent.
Training for persons serving as surrogate parents will be provided by
the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the District.
If you are
interested in volunteering to serve as a surrogate parent, more information can
be obtained from the Districts’ surrogate parent contact person - the person
responsible for the District’s special education program.

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS
Student
Council is off to a great start this year.
Mr. Wilburn is the new sponsor.
In a close race, Stephanie Elsea was elected President and Sydney Slavin
was elected Vice President.
The
Council had an organizational meeting on Wednesday, September 15. Members broke into groups to discuss student
issues and ideas for activities and
fundraisers. Some fundraising ideas
included a variety show, a donkey basketball game, a car wash, and a Sunday
dinner. Activity ideas included dances,
a haunted house, variety shows, and a field day for AYP incentive.
Due
to state budget cuts, classes, groups, and organizations will be required to
pay for their own field trips if they wish to have them. Student Council, as a service, is trying to
raise money to have a fund available if a class or organization does not have
the money for an educational field trip.
The
first activity of the year will be Brashear Idol, a variety show hosted by
Student Council. This event will take
place on Thursday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m.
There will be singing acts, dancing acts, comedy acts, and skits. Come join the fun. Faculty, staff, and students will be performing. Donations will be accepted to help establish
the field trip fund.

THANK YOU
At its meeting on August 19,
2010, the MFA Oil Foundation board awarded our school a grant in the amount of
$1,600. Mrs. Shipman received the check
from Tim Findling, Kirksville MFA Oil Manager, on September 15. This grant provided the district with the
necessary funds to replace the old edging of railroad ties with PVC pipe and
add pea gravel to the existing shredded rubber tire to provide additional
ground cover.
The district also received a
$200 grant form the Walmart Foundation.
Mrs. Shipman picked up the grant at the Kirksville Walmart store on July
30.
We would like to thank both
of these organizations for recognizing our playground as a worthwhile project
and salute them for being such good neighbors.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
As
the winter season approaches, we are reminding parents and students to listen

A+ PROGRAM NEWS
Attention Students and Parents/Guardians
of Students in Grades 9-12

brochure. Freshmen received them the
first day of school. Students have
until the last day of the first semester (December 21) to sign an agreement for
the A+ program. All requirements for
the students remain the same; however, some of the components of the program
have gone through some changes at the higher education level. Once everything is finalized, I will share
