ADAIR COUNTY
R-II NEWSLETTER

SCHOOL OPENS AUGUST 21
The Adair County R-II School year will begin for
teachers on Tuesday, August 20, 2002 with an in-service beginning at 8:30 a.m.
School will begin for students on Wednesday, August
21, 2002 at 8:45 a.m. and will be dismissed at 3:15 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served on the
first day as on all other school days.
Breakfast prices remain at $.65 for students and $1.00 for adults. Lunch prices remain at $1.25 for students
and $1.75 for adults. Free and reduced
price meals will be offered upon submission of a qualifying application for
those meals. Applications will be sent
home on the first day of school. Please
complete them as soon as possible if you think your family may qualify for the
program. Note: Please keep in mind that
you may complete an application at any time during the school year or submit a
change if your financial situation changes.
Kindergarten snacks and extra milk remain at $.20 a
day. This cost is not covered by the
free and reduced meal application.
Parents, please expect packets of forms to be sent
home with your student the first day.
You will be receiving free/reduced meal applications, emergency cards,
insurance applications and other important forms. Go through them the first evening and complete all the ones that
need to be returned to the school. Note: Please be sure to provide the district with
your new E-911 address so that we may update our records.
State law requires all students to
have proper and up-to-date immunizations to be allowed to attend school. Notices were sent to district students who
needed immunizations over the summer to remain current. If you have received such a letter and have
not had the required immunization(s), you must do so before August 21 or you
will not be allowed to attend school.
NEW STUDENTS
If you are new to the district,
please try to register prior to Wednesday, August 21. Remember you MUST have your up-to-date immunization records,
birth certificate, and social security number with you to be allowed to enter
upon registration.
Bus routes will run
approximately the same as last year. If
you have questions about your route or are new to the district, please call the
office at 323-5272. If you have
questions about your pick-up time, please call your driver: Larry Billington, 323-5556; John Shahan,
323-5391; Teri Crandall, 323-5269; or Marvin Magruder, 341-9185.
When you come into our buildings this year, you will see several new faces from the classroom to the kitchen. Please help us welcome them to our community.
Matthew Caldwell has been employed as 7-12 social studies teacher. Matthew received his Bachelor of Science Degree in History and his MAE from Truman State University.
Holly Crandall has been employed as our at-risk/health/K-3 physical education teacher. Holly was most recently employed by the Bruce Normile Juvenile Justice Center as a detention aide/PE teacher. She will be the assistant coach for the junior high and varsity girls and boys track teams.
Dr. James Rearick has been hired to teach 7-12 science. Dr. Rearick comes to us with fifteen years experience team-teaching in the Biochemistry Department at KCOM.
Don Wilburn will serve as the new high school principal. He spent the last two years in Newtown-Harris where he served as K-12 principal. Also included in his duties will be Transportation Director and Head Baseball Coach.
Tammy Wolter, a former graduate of Brashear High School, will be teaching third grade. Tammy received her MAE from Truman State University and taught fourth grade for the past two years at Knox County R-I.
In the kitchen, Aniece Harvey has taken over the reins as head cook. Kim Salter will be joining her as a full-time cook and Lora DeBie has been hired as a part-time server. Students, be sure to check out the menu for new items!
The Brashear
Parent-Teacher-Student (PTS) Association will be in charge of scheduling
concession stand workers for fall baseball/softball, junior high and high
school basketball, and spring baseball for the coming year. Any organizations interested in earning
extra funds by working the concession stand should contact Jackie Church
(323-5272) or Robin Taylor (627-4258).
Your support, as always, is greatly appreciated.
ELEMENTARY BUILDING
CONSTRUCTION
I know that
everyone is interested in the progress of the building project. Although this project has not progressed at
the rate that we had anticipated, we feel that it is imperative that we don’t
rush the process at the expense of compromising quality.
Construction
documents were approved at the special board meeting on Wednesday, August
14. We are planning on having a Pre-Bid
Conference on September 10th with bids due by 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
September 17th. Bids will be
opened at a special board meeting at 6:00 p.m. that evening with plans to award
contracts on or around September 20th.
We are eagerly
anticipating the day that we can break ground on this new project.
SUMMER
ADVENTURE
What an Adventure!
The summer was filled with rockets, go-karts, Spanish, algebra, and lots
of other new and exciting topics.
Edison Extra was the summer program that we implemented. Through this program, students were taught
the four core subject areas: Math, Science, Reading, and Communication
Arts. The "basics" were
stressed in all areas as well as some enrichment and advanced topics. Along with the core subjects was an
afternoon filled with enrichment courses: Spanish, computer games, puzzling,
rockets, arts & crafts, and go-karts.
The school day was filled to overflowing for the students and teachers
alike.
A total of 141 students, K-8, were enrolled with an
average daily attendance of 128 students.
This was the first summer that transportation and lunch were provided
and many parents seemed to like those options.
Students were also given chances to receive attendance and behavior
incentives, which also seemed to be a positive.
Overall, the Summer Adventure was a tremendous
success!
RETIREES
HONORED
This spring thirty-seven
retired employees were honored for their years of service with a plaque that
now hangs in the hallway near the gym.
We send our thanks and gratitude for 713 years of combined service.

We made an
effort to include all retirees with ten or more years of service. Our apologies in advance if we have
inadvertently omitted someone. If you
know of someone that we have overlooked, please contact us.
Thank you to Neva Sleeth for
the 1937 yearbook—it will be placed in the historical collection in the
library.
CAFETERIA NEWS
Our
cafeteria will feature an open salad bar for all students K-12. Grades K-6 will have this option to use only
for seconds. They must take an entrée
and two sides, eat everything and then they may get additional items from the
salad bar. Grades 7-12 may have only
the salad bar or take the an entrée and two sides and then go directly to the
salad bar. They may also use the salad
bar for seconds. We will have the open
salad bar daily unless we start seeing a lot of waste.
Peanut butter and jelly will not be an entrée option this
year but it will be set out daily for your child(ren) to have.
