CLASSES RESUMED AUGUST 20TH
The Adair County R-II School year began on Tuesday, August 19 for teachers with an in-service beginning at 8:30 a.m. Classes resumed for students on Wednesday, August 20.
Breakfast and lunch will be served each day. Breakfast prices have increased to $.75 for students and remain at $1.00 for adults. Lunch prices have increased to $1.50 for students and $2.00 for adults. Milk can still be purchased for 20 cents a carton. Free and reduced price meals will be offered upon submission of a qualifying application for those meals. Applications were sent home with your child(ren) on the first day of school. Please complete and return the application as soon as possible if you think your family may qualify for the program. Note: Keep in mind that you may complete an application at any time during the school year or submit a change if your financial situation changes.
Kindergarten snacks have also increased to $.50 a day. This cost is not covered by the free and reduced meal application.
Parents, packets of forms were sent home with your student the first day. If you have not already done so, please complete all the ones that need to be returned to the school.
Note: Please be sure to provide the district with your new E-911 address so that we may update our records. If your address is not correct on the label of this newsletter, please call 323-5272 and provide us with the correct information.
PRESCHOOL SCREENING
The Adair County R-II School will conduct its annual preschool screening on Monday, September 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Parents as Teachers room. We recommend that all district children ages 3-5 be developmentally screened. This screening includes hearing, vision, height and weight. Note: If your child will be entering Kindergarten next fall, the annual Kindergarten Registration and Screening will be held in May 2004. Therefore, you do not need an appointment for your child at this time.

BUS ROUTES
Bus routes are running the same as last year. If you have questions about your route, please call the office at 323-5272. NEW EMPLOYEES
Cory Milles has been employed as our sixth grade teacher. He fills the position vacated by Mrs. Feeney who has moved to the Kindergarten classroom. Cory received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication and his MAE from Truman State University.
Rick Grunden has been employed as our health and K-12 physical education teacher. Rick spent the last three years in Canton R-V where he taught junior high and high school health and physical education. He will be coaching baseball, junior high and varsity basketball, and will serve as our athletic director.
Mary Ellen Riley has been hired to teach 7-12 English and drama. She spent last year teaching at Knox County R-I. Mary Ellen received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and her MAE from Truman State University.
In the kitchen, Kim Salter has stepped up to assume the duties of food service director. Cathy March has been employed as a full-time cook.

ASBESTOS REPORT
The district must ensure that students and/or their guardians are informed about asbestos inspections, reinspections, surveillance, response actions and post-response action activities at least once a year.
The most recent Asbestos Reinspection is available in the district office for public viewing during business hours.
NEW ELEMENTARY CHANGES ACCESS
As a result of our new building and its location, we have had to make some changes for those students walking and those being dropped off/picked up by adults. The changes were needed for safety and convenience for all students, parents, and patrons.
For those students who will be walking home, the procedure is almost the same. Walkers will enter the High School building through the main entrance and then proceed through the gym to the northwest doorway, across the sidewalk, and enter the Elementary main entrance by the office. They then will go to the multi-purpose room and sit in their assigned spot. Afternoons will be just the opposite. We want to keep our walkers on the sidewalk in front of the High School and old Elementary.
For those students whose parents will be dropping them off and picking them up, we have changed the procedure and place, as well. We will be making the alley between the brown building and the old elementary one-way, running east to west. Please enter the alley at the east entrance, drive west through the alley, and drop off your riders. Please have your child/children walk up to the school from the alley. Do NOT drive up to the school. We are trying to keep that area free and safe for our students. In the afternoon, please park in the alley and fill in space as much as possible. A teacher will walk with students out to the alley.
These are new procedures and we may need to make changes and adjustments. Please be patient. Our main concern is the safety of the students, and if we all keep that in mind, things will go smoothly.
PUBLIC NOTICE
All public schools are required to provide a free and appropriate public education to all students with disabilities, including those attending private/parochial schools, beginning on the child’s third birthday through age twenty (20), regardless of the child’s disability. The public school assures that to comply with the full educational opportunity goal, services for students three (3) through twenty-one (21) will be fully implemented by 1999. Disabilities include: learning disabilities, mental retardation, behavior disorders/emotional disturbance, speech disorders (voice, fluency, or articulation), language disorders, visually impaired, hearing impaired, physically/other health impaired, multiple disabilities, deaf/blind, autism, early childhood special education, and traumatic brain injury.
The public school assures that it will provide information and referral services necessary to assist the State in the implementation of early intervention services for infants and toddlers eligible for the Missouri’s First Steps Program.
All public schools are required to provide parents the right to inspect and review personally identifiable information collected and used or maintained by the district relating to their children. Parents have the right to request amendment of these records if they feel the information is inaccurate, misleading, or violates the privacy or other rights of their children. Parents have the right to file complaints with the U.S. Department of Education or the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education concerning alleged failures by the district to meet the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). You may contact your local district, if you wish to review the requirements provided in FERPA.
The public school has developed a Local Compliance Plan for implementation of Special Education and this Plan is available for public review during regular school hours on days school is in session in the Office of the Superintendent of Schools. The Local Compliance Plan is a written narrative which describes the district’s plan for compliance with the requirements for identifying and serving all students with disabilities. Included in this plan are the policies and procedures which the district must follow regarding storage, disclosure to third parties, retention, and destruction of personally identifiable information. The plan also describes the assurances that services are provided in compliance with the requirement of 34 CFR 76.301 of the General Education Provision Act.
Public schools in the State of Missouri are required to conduct an annual census of all children with disabilities or suspected disabilities from birth through age twenty (20) who reside in the district or whose parent/legal guardian resides in the district. This census is compiled as of May 1 each year. This information is treated as confidential and submitted to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Information to be collected includes: name of each child, parent/legal guardian’s name/address; birth date and age of each child; and each child’s disability or suspected disability. Should the district fail to submit an annual census, the State Board of Education may withhold state aid until the census is submitted. If you have a child with a disability or know of a child with a disability who is not attending the public school, please contact your school district.
This notice can be provided in languages such as Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, and Vietnamese or any other language as may be necessary.

Breakfast each day includes milk and juice. The following items are offered daily for students to choose from in lieu of the main entrée: salad bar, yogurt or peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
