Classes will resume for students on Tuesday, August 24.
Breakfast and lunch
will be served each day. Breakfast

and $2.00 for adults. Milk can still be
purchased for 20 cents a carton. Free
and reduced price meals will be offered upon submission of a qualifying
application for those meals.
Applications will be sent home with your child(ren) on the first day of
school. Please complete and return the
application as soon as possible if you think your family may qualify for the
program. Note: Keep in mind that you
may complete an application at any time during the school year or submit a
change if your financial situation changes.
Kindergarten snacks
will be 40 cents a day. This cost is
not covered by the free and reduced meal application. Parents are encouraged to pay for snacks at the beginning of each
month.
Parents, please
expect packets of forms to be sent home with your student(s) the first
day. You will be receiving free/reduced
meal applications, emergency cards, insurance applications, and other important
forms. Go through them the first
evening and complete all the ones that need to be returned to the school.
There have been
several changes to the bus routes for the upcoming school year. Larry Billington (Bus 35), John Shahan (Bus
36), Teri Crandall (Bus 37), and Cletus Pickles (Bus 38) will be driving for us
again this school year. However, many
students have been reassigned to different routes. Your driver will be contacting you with approximate pick-up and
drop-off times. If you do not hear from
a driver, please contact the school at 323-5272.
Busy Bees will meet
for the first time on September 13 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in the Parents as
Teachers (PAT) classroom. Children who
are three and four years of age are eligible for this program.
Our annual preschool
screening will be on Monday, September 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the
PAT room. We recommend that all
children ages 3-4 be developmentally screened.
This screening includes hearing, vision, height, and weight. If your child will be entering Kindergarten
next fall, the annual Kindergarten Registration and Screening will be held in
May 2005. Therefore, you do not need an
appointment for your child at this time.
If you are interested in learning more or need to schedule an
appointment, you may call the school at 323-5272.

21ST CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER BEFORE & AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
The Adair County
R-II School District has been awarded the 21st Century Community
Learning Center grant. This grant will
be used to implement a before- and after-school learning program for students
in grades K-6 at the Brashear Elementary School.
The 21st
Century Community Learning Center program is a part of the No Child Left Behind
Act of 2001. The purpose of this
program is to create community-learning centers that provide academic
enrichment opportunities for children to meet State and local student standards
in core academic subjects, to offer students a broad array of enrichment
activities that can complement their regular academic programs, and to offer
literacy and other educational services to the families of the participating
children.
The Adair County
R-II School District is very excited about the programming that can be offered
from the strong partnership formations with various organizations in the
area. Collaborative efforts between
Truman State University (and it’s entities such as the Center for Student Involvement)
and the district has produced some extremely unique possibilities that has the
potential to be mutually beneficial to the students of the district as well as
to the students at Truman State University.
Additionally, the
Kirksville YMCA is committed to providing a strong Character Development
program in the school as well as a companion element of the program that would
reinforce the Character Development curriculum outside of the school setting by
providing monthly Parents’ Nights Out.
During Parents’ Nights Out, the YMCA would provide childcare, healthy
snacks and a movie that reinforces the character fundamentals taught during the
21st CCLC program.
The district is also
fortunate to have partnered with the A. T. Still University of Health Sciences
and the Still National Osteopathic Museum and the University of Missouri
Outreach and Extension, as well as the Missouri Department of Conservation who
have made outstanding offers of on-site educational programming, opportunities
for field trips, team building activities, and tutoring services. Additional on-site programming offers have
come from partners such as the Adair County Health Department, the Missouri
State Highway Patrol, and the Adair County Public Library. Offers of volunteers and mentors have come
from the Brashear Community Bible Church, Brashear United Methodist Church, and
Brashear National Honor Society.
If you would like
your child to be involved in this program, contact the school at
660-323-5272. The cost of the program
is $10 per week for one child and $5 per week for each additional child in the
family. The program is free to those
students who qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. More details about the program will be
available following the Gab Sessions at 7:00 p.m. on August 30 (for grades K-3)
and August 31 (for grades 4-6).
PTS officers are
still needed for the 2004-2005 school year.
All of the current officers will be stepping down from the Board. If no one volunteers, PTS may cease to
exist.
Please contact Robin
Taylor, Elaine Scudder, or Brenda Killen if you are interested in becoming a
member of the Board. Interested parties
may also contact the school at 323-5272.
All public schools
are required to provide a free and appropriate public education to all students
with disabilities, including those attending private/parochial schools,
beginning on the child’s third birthday through age twenty (20), regardless of
the child’s disability. The public
school assures that to comply with the full educational opportunity goal,
services for students three (3) through twenty-one (21) will be fully
implemented by 1999. Disabilities
include: learning disabilities, mental
retardation, behavior disorders/emotional disturbance, speech disorders (voice,
fluency, or articulation), language disorders, visually impaired, hearing
impaired, physically/other health impaired, multiple disabilities, deaf/blind,
autism, early childhood special education, and traumatic brain injury.
The public school
assures that it will provide information and referral services necessary to
assist the State in the implementation of early intervention services for
infants and toddlers eligible for the Missouri’s First Steps Program.
All public schools
are required to provide parents the right to inspect and review personally
identifiable information collected and used or maintained by the district
relating to their children. Parents
have the right to request amendment of these records if they feel the
information is inaccurate, misleading, or violates the privacy or other rights
of their children. Parents have the
right to file complaints with the U.S. Department of Education or the Missouri
Department of Elementary and Secondary Education concerning alleged failures by
the district to meet the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and
Privacy Act (FERPA). You may contact
your local district, if you wish to review the requirements provided in FERPA.
The public school
has developed a Local Compliance Plan for implementation of Special Education
and this Plan is available for public review during regular school hours on
days school is in session in the Office of the Superintendent of Schools. The Local Compliance Plan is a written
narrative which describes the district’s plan for compliance with the
requirements for identifying and serving all students with disabilities. Included in this plan are the policies and
procedures which the district must follow regarding storage, disclosure to
third parties, retention, and destruction of personally identifiable
information. The plan also describes
the assurances that services are provided in compliance with the requirement of
34 CFR 76.301 of the General Education Provision Act.
Public schools in the
State of Missouri are required to conduct an annual census of all children with
disabilities or suspected disabilities from birth through age twenty (20) who
reside in the district or whose parent/legal guardian resides in the district. This census is compiled as of May 1 each
year. This information is treated as
confidential and submitted to the Missouri Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education. Information to be collected
includes: name of each child,
parent/legal guardian’s name/address; birth date and age of each child; and
each child’s disability or suspected disability. Should the district fail to submit an annual census, the State
Board of Education may withhold state aid until the census is submitted. If you have a child with a disability or
know of a child with a disability who is not attending the public school,
please contact your school district.
This notice can be
provided in languages such as Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, and Vietnamese or any
other language as may be necessary.
